The Information Regulator of South Africa is an independent statutory body established under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) of 2013 and the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) of 2000. It is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with these laws, ensuring that both public and private entities handle personal information lawfully and that citizens have access to information when needed.
Main Functions of the Information Regulator:
- Enforcing POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act)
- Ensures that personal information is processed lawfully, fairly, and transparently.
- Investigates complaints about the misuse of personal data.
- Issues fines or penalties for non-compliance.
- Overseeing PAIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act)
- Ensures that citizens can access information from government and private entities when legally required.
- Handles complaints related to the denial of information requests.
- Handling Complaints & Investigations
- Investigates cases where personal data is misused or where access to information is unfairly denied.
- Takes legal action against non-compliant entities.
- Raising Awareness & Providing Guidance
- Educates businesses, government institutions, and the public about their rights and responsibilities under POPIA and PAIA.
