South African National Parks (SANParks) continues to lead the way in conservation by implementing the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Armed Environmental Monitors initiative. This important programme is aimed at protecting South Africa’s natural heritage, empowering local communities, and tackling the ongoing challenges of unemployment while strengthening conservation efforts.
The Armed Environmental Monitors Programme forms part of SANParks’ broader conservation and community development strategy. It not only helps secure protected areas from illegal activities but also provides unemployed youth and community members with valuable job opportunities and skills development in the environmental management field.
The appointed Armed Environmental Monitors will be paid a wage rate of R 311.00 per day as per Expanded Public Works Programme rates. These positions are fixed term contracts up to the end of March 2026, renewable by mutual agreement and further funding
REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12.
- Diploma in nature Conservation or equivalent NQF levels will serve as an added advantage.
- No criminal record.
- Self-loading Firearm certificates with SAPS competency.
- Will be required to work weekends and public holidays.
- Physically fit and passionate about Nature conservation.
- Willingness to work irregular and long hours as and when required.
- Punctual and neat.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Environmental monitoring and information gathering for research purposes.
- Participate in law enforcement which include antipoaching patrols.
- Assist in predator fence maintenance.
- Participate in fire management, eradication of alien fauna and flora and land rehabilitation.
- Ensure safety of BSP teams and individuals from dangerous animals whilst working in the field.
- Assist with infrastructure maintenance in the section
- Basic data capture and quality control.
- Asset and equipment management.
- Assisting Section ranger with all routine tasks.
