Broader impact
This programme forms part of SACO’s wider mandate—rooted in its mandate from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture via the Mzansi Golden Economy Strategy (2011), and operational since its 2015 launch—aimed at mapping and enhancing South Africa’s cultural sector. Hosted by Nelson Mandela University and developed in partnership with Rhodes University and UKZN, SACO provides critical data and insight into cultural-economic trends.
By empowering postgraduate researchers, the scholarship not only supports individual academic journeys but also feeds into broader cultural policy frameworks and creative industry development.
Our Conclusion:
For postgraduate students driven by a passion for culture, heritage, arts, or sports, this R40 000 SACO scholarship provides more than just funds—it’s a gateway into a research community shaping South Africa’s cultural narrative. Even if it’s partial, it can ease pressure, free up time for deep research, and open doors to conferences, networks, and policy engagement.
Whether you’re exploring indigenous cultural practices, designing heritage tourism strategies, analysing creative economy frameworks, or studying sport–culture overlaps—if your work aligns with SACO’s mission to value and uplift South Africa’s cultural sectors, this opportunity could be pivotal.
Apply now, gather your documents, finesse your proposal—and step into the future of research-driven culture-making.
