What is the ATS Bursary Programme?
The ATS Bursary Programme is a fully funded opportunity that covers the academic and practical training required to become an Air Traffic Services Officer. This includes the study of air traffic control (ATC), aerodrome control, approach control, and en-route control. The training takes place at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy in Bonaero Park, Gauteng — a world-class institution recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
This programme is designed to fast-track previously disadvantaged youth and underrepresented groups into the aviation sector, thereby promoting diversity, equity, and transformation within the industry.
The various Air Traffic Services bursar streams are listed as follows:
- Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO)
- Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO)
- Target Generating Officer (TGO)
- Airport Management Centre (AMC) Liaison Officer
- Simulator Support Officer (SSO)
WHAT THE BURSARY COVERS:
The ATS Bursary Programme is a full-cost bursary and includes:
- Full tuition fees at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy
- Accommodation and meals
- Transport allowance
- Training material and uniforms
- A monthly stipend
- Medical aid and psycho-social support services
With all basic needs covered, students can focus entirely on their intensive theoretical and practical training.
WHO CAN APPLY?
To qualify for the ATS Bursary Programme, applicants need to meet the following minimum requirements:
- Matric certificate with a pass in the following subjects: Pure Mathematics (Level 4 / HG – D or SG C or above) and English (Level 4 / HG – D or SG C or above)
- South African citizen with a valid Identity Document
- Medically fit and willing to undergo our medical assessment for the ATSO stream
- Attach Grade 12 results to your application
- Be willing to relocate anywhere in the country
- Unemployed South African Youth
- Applicants who previously were on a similar programme with ATNS will not be considered
Candidates must also demonstrate a keen interest in aviation, the ability to work under pressure, and strong communication and analytical skills.
HOW TO APPLY:
The application process involves:
- Completing an online application form
- Uploading certified copies of your ID and Matric results
- Completing an aptitude test (successful candidates are invited)
- Undergoing a medical assessment
- Attending a panel interview
