Why These Government Artisan Jobs are Important for TVET College Graduates
South Africa’s TVET system provides vocational and technical education in fields closely connected to artisan careers. Students completing engineering-related NATED programmes often progress through workplace training and occupational requirements before becoming fully qualified artisans.

Does an N6 Certificate Automatically Qualify You for These Artisan Jobs?
No. This is probably the most important point in this article.
An N6 certificate and a Trade Test Certificate are not interchangeable qualifications.
For example, imagine that you have:
- N4 Electrical Engineering
- N5 Electrical Engineering
- N6 Electrical Engineering
but you have not obtained the appropriate Trade Test Certificate.
If the vacancy specifically states that an appropriate Electrical Trade Test Certificate is required, your N6 certificate alone does not satisfy that stated requirement.
Instead of applying indiscriminately, look for opportunities such as apprenticeships, artisan development programmes, learnerships, workplace training, internships or other technical positions that correspond with your current stage of training.
Why Grade A Artisan Posts Are Important for Newly Qualified Artisans
Government artisan grading can make vacancy advertisements confusing.
The key is to read the experience requirement rather than assuming that every government artisan vacancy requires years of experience.
For example, some vacancies in this list explicitly indicate no experience for Grade A after obtaining the relevant Trade Test Certificate.
That creates a genuine entry point for a newly qualified artisan.
By contrast, Grade B, Grade C and Foreman opportunities may have considerably higher experience requirements.
Always apply against the grade for which you actually qualify.

Common Mistakes TVET and Artisan Applicants Should Avoid
One of the biggest mistakes is applying for every vacancy containing the word “artisan” without checking the trade.
An Electrical Trade Test Certificate, for example, does not automatically qualify you for a plumbing or carpentry vacancy.
Applicants should also avoid:
- Assuming N6 automatically replaces a Trade Test Certificate
- Applying for Artisan Foreman jobs without the required experience
- Ignoring driver’s licence requirements
- Applying after the closing date
- Selecting the wrong centre where multiple posts are advertised
- Leaving out a vacancy reference number when one is required
- Uploading unreadable certificates
- Using the same generic CV for every technical position
- Claiming technical skills or experience they cannot substantiate

Instead of simply writing: “Qualified artisan”
provide specific information about your trade and qualifications.
Your CV could clearly identify:

- Workplace experience
- Machinery or equipment you can operate

Do not add competencies you do not actually possess.

If you already hold the relevant Trade Test Certificate, Grade A government artisan positions can be particularly important because some provide an opportunity to enter formal employment without extensive post-qualification experience.
If you have completed N6 but have not yet completed the occupational requirements needed to become a qualified artisan, do not become discouraged by vacancies requiring trade tests.
