TVET College Applications for 2027: All 50 Public TVET Colleges, Opening & Closing Dates

TVET College Applications for 2027: All 50 Public TVET Colleges, Opening & Closing Dates
Written by Sifiso Mhlongo

If you are planning to study at a public TVET College in South Africa in 2027, September and October 2026 could be some of the most important months of your application journey.

There are 50 public TVET Colleges across South Africa, with campuses in all nine provinces. However, there is one major mistake prospective students should avoid: assuming that all 50 colleges open and close applications on the same dates.

They do not.

Each TVET College can publish its own application period, and dates may even differ according to whether you are applying for an NC(V), occupational, apprenticeship, skills or other programme.

Some colleges have already announced or completed their 2027 application windows, while many others had not yet published a verified main 2027 application deadline at the time this guide was updated on 7 September 2026.

This Edupstairs guide brings all 50 public TVET Colleges together so that prospective students can identify their college, monitor its application status and prepare before applications close.

Before applying, use the Edupstairs TVET Colleges Explorer to research programmes, campuses, admission requirements, application information, NSFAS resources and other important information for South Africa’s public TVET Colleges.

Are TVET College Applications for 2027 Open?

Yes, applications have started opening at some public TVET Colleges, but there is no single national opening date covering all 50 colleges.

As of 7 September 2026, Edupstairs has verified important 2027 application information for colleges including Boland College, Port Elizabeth TVET College and Lephalale TVET College.

Other colleges are expected to publish or update their 2027 admission information as the application season progresses.

This means prospective students should not wait for one national announcement.

Instead, identify the colleges you are interested in now and monitor them individually.

Confirmed TVET College 2027 Application Dates

Boland College

Boland College opened applications for the 2027 academic year on:

Opening date: 5 August 2026
Closing date: 2 September 2026
Status as at 7 September 2026: Closed for the advertised application period

Students can still use the Boland College 2027 Courses, Requirements and Applications page to research programmes, campuses and admission information and to monitor future intake information.

Applicants should not assume that a closed main application period means that no programme-specific opportunity can be advertised later.

Port Elizabeth TVET College

Port Elizabeth TVET College has officially opened applications for selected NC(V) Level 2 programmes for the 2027 academic year.

Opening date: 1 September 2026
Closing date: 30 September 2026
Application support: 7–18 September 2026
Status: OPEN

This particular application campaign is important because it is not an unrestricted application period for every course offered by the college.

The advertised intake covers selected NC(V) Level 2 programmes.

Applicants can read the complete Edupstairs guide here:

Applicants interested in this intake should not wait until 30 September.

Lephalale TVET College

Lephalale TVET College has also opened its 2027 application process.

Opening date: 7 September 2026
Closing date: 30 September 2026
Status: OPEN

Applicants should complete the college’s required online application process and submit the necessary supporting documents before the closing date.

Use the Edupstairs TVET Colleges Explorer to research Lephalale TVET College and compare its programmes with other public colleges.

Why Are So Many 2027 Dates Still Marked “Not Yet Verified”?

This is deliberate.

Edupstairs does not recommend taking an application date from a previous academic year and simply changing the year to 2027.

A college that opened on 1 September last year does not necessarily have to open on 1 September this year.

Application periods can change because of:

  • programme availability;
  • campus capacity;
  • academic calendars;
  • qualification changes;
  • placement and selection processes;
  • occupational programme funding;
  • institutional decisions; and
  • changes in the TVET qualification landscape.

Therefore, where a verified 2027 notice is not available, the responsible position is to mark the date as not yet verified and continue monitoring the college.

This article should consequently be bookmarked because additional dates can be added as colleges announce their 2027 intakes.

September 2026 Is a Critical Month for TVET Applicants

Even though many dates are still awaiting verification, prospective students should not interpret this as a reason to wait.

The confirmed dates already demonstrate how quickly application windows can move.

Boland College’s advertised application period has already closed.

Port Elizabeth TVET College closes its advertised NC(V) Level 2 applications on 30 September 2026.

Lephalale TVET College also closes its current 2027 application window on 30 September 2026.

The lesson is simple:

Prepare before your college opens. Do not start preparing on the closing date.

Use the Edupstairs TVET Colleges Explorer Before You Apply

One of the biggest mistakes applicants make is choosing a college before properly researching the programme.

The Edupstairs TVET Colleges Explorer has been developed to help prospective students investigate South Africa’s public TVET Colleges from one platform.

Depending on the information available for a particular college, students can research:

  • programmes;
  • NC(V) qualifications;
  • NATED/Report 191 programmes where applicable;
  • occupational qualifications;
  • campus information;
  • admission requirements;
  • application information;
  • NSFAS resources;
  • fees and student information;
  • application status resources; and
  • past examination papers and memoranda.

Instead of asking only “Which TVET College is open?”, applicants should ask:

“Which open TVET College offers the programme that matches my results and career plans?”

That is a much better application strategy.

Which TVET Course Should You Apply For?

Do not select a programme simply because you recognise its name.

Start with your intended career.

For example, someone interested in becoming an electrician should investigate electrical, occupational and artisan pathways rather than choosing an unrelated business programme simply because applications are open.

The Edupstairs Career & Qualification Explorer allows students to search careers and South African qualification records and investigate possible connections between occupations and qualifications.

The platform currently brings together thousands of qualification records and more than 1,500 OFO career records.

You can research careers such as:

  • Electrician
  • Plumber
  • Welder
  • Software Developer
  • Accountant
  • Human Resources professionals
  • Mechanical trades
  • Engineering occupations
  • ICT careers
  • Tourism careers
  • Hospitality careers

NC(V), NATED and Occupational Programmes: Know the Difference

Prospective students should also understand that “TVET application” does not refer to one single type of qualification.

NC(V)

The National Certificate (Vocational) generally runs from:

  • NC(V) Level 2
  • NC(V) Level 3
  • NC(V) Level 4

Entry into Level 2 is commonly associated with Grade 9 or an equivalent qualification, although programme-specific requirements must always be checked.

NC(V) programmes cover vocational areas such as engineering, ICT, finance, hospitality, tourism, office administration and other fields.

NATED / Report 191

Many TVET Colleges have historically offered NATED/Report 191 programmes, particularly in engineering and business-related fields.

However, applicants need to pay close attention to current programme availability because the TVET qualification landscape is changing and some legacy programmes may be phased out, placed into teach-out arrangements or replaced by occupational qualifications.

Never assume that because a college historically offered N1–N6 or N4–N6 programmes, it will automatically accept new first-time students into every level in 2027.

Occupational Qualifications

Occupational programmes are becoming increasingly important within South Africa’s skills-development system.

These can include qualifications and pathways connected to occupations such as:

  • Electrician
  • Welder
  • Plumber
  • Fitter and Turner
  • Automotive Motor Mechanic
  • Boilermaker
  • Chef
  • Office Administrator
  • Software Developer
  • Early Childhood Development Practitioner
  • Artisan trades

Admission periods for occupational programmes may be different from the normal annual NC(V) application window.

TVET Students Should Also Explore the 21 SETAs

Getting into college is only part of the journey.

Students should also understand how their qualification connects with workplace training and industry.

South Africa’s 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) support skills development across different sectors.

Depending on the programme and funding opportunity, SETAs can be associated with:

Edupstairs has created a dedicated SETA Platform where students can explore all 21 SETAs and more than 1,000 programme and pathway records.

This is particularly useful for TVET students who will eventually need workplace experience, apprenticeship training or another industry-based pathway.

Documents to Prepare for 2027 TVET College Applications

Do not wait until applications open before searching for your documents.

Requirements differ between colleges, but applicants should generally have digital copies of relevant documents ready, which may include:

  1. South African ID or applicable identification documentation
  2. Latest school results
  3. Grade 9, Grade 11 or Grade 12 results depending on the programme
  4. Matric certificate where applicable
  5. Proof of residence where requested
  6. Parent or guardian information where applicable
  7. Supporting documents required for funding
  8. Active cellphone number
  9. Active email address

Documents should be clear and readable.

If a college requires certified copies, check how recent the certification must be.

How to Apply to a TVET College for 2027

There is no single application form that automatically applies you to all 50 public TVET Colleges.

Applicants generally need to apply through the application system used by their chosen college.

A typical process involves:

  1. Visit the Edupstairs TVET Colleges Explorer.
  2. Select your preferred college.
  3. Research the programmes offered.
  4. Check the admission requirements.
  5. Confirm that applications are open for your chosen programme.
  6. Follow the college’s official application route.
  7. Complete any required career guidance, placement or profiling assessment.
  8. Enter your personal and academic information.
  9. Upload the required documents.
  10. Select the correct programme and campus.
  11. Submit your application.
  12. Save your application or student number.
  13. Keep proof of submission.
  14. Monitor your application status.

Do not send application documents to random social-media accounts or individuals claiming they can “secure space” for you.

Can You Apply to More Than One TVET College?

Yes, prospective students can consider applications to more than one institution where the respective application rules permit it.

This can be a sensible strategy.

For example, instead of depending entirely on admission to one highly subscribed programme, you could research several public TVET Colleges offering suitable programmes.

However, do not submit random applications simply to increase your numbers.

Each programme should still fit your:

  • academic results;
  • career objective;
  • location;
  • funding situation; and
  • admission eligibility.

Use the TVET Colleges Explorer to compare institutions first.

What Happens After You Apply?

Submitting an application does not mean you have been accepted.

Your application may still need to go through:

  • document verification;
  • academic assessment;
  • placement testing;
  • programme selection;
  • campus allocation;
  • capacity checks; and
  • admission processing.

Application status terminology varies between institutions.

You may encounter statuses such as:

  • Submitted – your application has been received.
  • Pending – the college is still processing the application.
  • Outstanding documents – additional documentation may be required.
  • Provisionally accepted – you may have received conditional admission subject to further requirements.
  • Accepted – the institution has offered you admission.
  • Unsuccessful – the application was not approved for that programme/intake.

Always use the official college application or student portal to determine your actual status.

NSFAS Funding for TVET College Students in 2027

Qualifying students studying at public TVET Colleges may be eligible for financial support through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), subject to the funding rules applying to the 2027 cycle.

But remember:

Applying to a TVET College and applying for NSFAS are two separate processes.

A college application does not automatically create an NSFAS funding application.

Likewise, NSFAS approval does not automatically mean that a particular TVET College has admitted you.

Prospective students requiring financial assistance should therefore monitor the official 2027 NSFAS funding cycle separately.

TVET College Applications Can Close Before You Expect

One of the biggest lessons from the 2027 application cycle is that applicants cannot assume they have until October or November.

Boland College is a perfect example.

Its advertised 2027 application window ran from 5 August to 2 September 2026.

By the time some applicants start searching “TVET applications 2027” in late September, that particular window has already closed.

This is why Edupstairs recommends preparing your documents before your preferred college opens.

What If Your Preferred TVET College Has Not Opened Yet?

If the table above says Not Yet Verified, do not panic.

Use the waiting period productively.

You should:

  • research the programmes;
  • check entry requirements;
  • decide which campus you want;
  • prepare your ID and academic documents;
  • create a reliable email address if necessary;
  • make sure your cellphone number remains active;
  • investigate NSFAS;
  • research alternative colleges;
  • explore the career connected to the qualification; and
  • monitor the official application notice.

Then apply as soon as the relevant intake officially opens.

Do Not Use Old Application Dates for 2027

Applicants searching online will find hundreds of old TVET College application articles.

Check the year carefully.

A page saying:

“Applications open 1 September and close 30 September”

does not automatically mean those dates apply to 2027.

It may be describing applications for 2025 or 2026.

Always check:

Which academic year?

Which programme?

Which intake?

Which campus?

When was the notice published?

This becomes even more important for colleges that have multiple semester, trimester, occupational or project-funded intakes.

Edupstairs Advice for 2027 TVET Applicants

If you intend studying at a TVET College in 2027, do not wait for every college in South Africa to open before taking action.

Start now.

First, explore all 50 public TVET Colleges and shortlist at least two or three institutions offering programmes relevant to your career plans.

Next, use the Career & Qualification Explorer to investigate where the qualification could potentially lead.

If you are interested in artisan training, apprenticeships, learnerships or workplace experience, also investigate the Edupstairs SETA Platform.

Then prepare your documents.

Most importantly, apply when the actual 2027 intake for your programme opens.

Do not rely on screenshots from previous years, old Facebook posts or unverified closing dates.

The 2027 application season is already underway, and some application windows can be much shorter than applicants expect.

Frequently Asked Questions About TVET College Applications for 2027

There is no single opening date for all 50 public TVET Colleges. Each institution can publish its own application schedule.

  1. When do TVET applications for 2027 close?

  1. Where can I see all 50 TVET Colleges?

Use the Edupstairs TVET Colleges Explorer to explore public colleges, programmes, campuses, admission guidance and application resources.

  1. Can NSFAS fund TVET College students?

Qualifying students enrolled in eligible programmes at public TVET Colleges may receive NSFAS funding subject to the applicable rules.

  1. Do I automatically apply for NSFAS when applying to college?

No. College admission and NSFAS funding are separate processes.

Applicants can consider multiple colleges where the institutions’ application rules permit it. This can improve your options, but each programme should be appropriate for your results and career objectives.

  1. What if applications at my preferred college have not opened?

Prepare your documents and monitor the college. Do not use an old year’s application dates as confirmation of the 2027 intake.

  1. Where can I research TVET careers?

Use the Edupstairs Career & Qualification Explorer to investigate South African careers, qualifications, NQF levels and possible qualification-to-career connections.

  1. Where can TVET students find learnerships and apprenticeships?

  1. Can TVET College application dates change?

Yes. Colleges can amend or extend application periods. Programme-specific intakes can also have different dates from the main annual application window.

Edupstairs distinguishes between confirmed 2027 application dates and dates that have not yet been verified. Previous-year application periods are not automatically presented as 2027 dates.

Where a college has not published or Edupstairs has not verified the relevant 2027 application window, this article marks the date as Not Yet Verified.
