HCI Foundation Bursary Programme for 2026

Education remains one of the most powerful tools to break the cycle of poverty, and the HCI Foundation is at the forefront of empowering South African youth through its transformative bursary programme. For 2026, the HCI Foundation Bursary Programme continues its mission of creating equitable access to higher education for academically deserving yet financially constrained students. As one of the country’s most impactful privately-funded bursaries, it offers a vital lifeline to students determined to change their lives and communities.

About the HCI Foundation

The HCI Foundation is the corporate social investment arm of HCI (Hosken Consolidated Investments), a black empowerment investment holding company. With a firm commitment to social justice, education equity, and youth development, the Foundation has been funding tertiary education since 2006. Their bursary programme has supported thousands of students across public universities and universities of technology in South Africa.

Who Can Apply?

The 2026 bursary is targeted at students who demonstrate strong academic performance and significant financial need. The Foundation welcomes applications from:

  • South African citizens, refugees, or asylum seekers
  • Full-time students accepted to study at public universities or universities of technology in South Africa
  • Students whose annual household income does not exceed R38,000 per person
  • Students who are between the ages of 17 and 35

Both first-time applicants and returning students may apply. Preference is given to those who are already enrolled and performing well in their current studies.

What the Bursary Covers

Unlike full-cost bursaries, the HCI Foundation offers partial bursaries. This means the Foundation contributes a set amount towards tuition fees, allowing students to combine it with other funding sources such as NSFAS, family contributions, or other bursaries. While accommodation and textbooks are not covered, the tuition relief significantly eases the financial burden.

Application Process

Applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Latest academic transcript
  • Proof of household income
  • Certified ID copy
  • Proof of acceptance or registration at a public tertiary institution

Applicants are advised to apply early and ensure that all documentation is valid and legible to avoid disqualification.

Applications for the HCI Foundation bursary must be done directly through your university. To apply, please contact your universities Financial Aid or Advancement Office (only at one of the approved universities), you will then be invited to apply for the HCI Foundation Bursary Programme.

Selected students will receive a direct link to the online application platform from their university’s Postgraduate Office. Applications will be done between 1 February and 10 March 2026, and will managed exclusively through the university’s internal systems.
