In a significant stride toward equipping South Africa’s youth with future-focused skills, Sasol, in partnership with The Education Support Forum (TEDSF) and the Jobs Fund, has launched a ground-breaking Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Training Programme. This initiative is designed to prepare young South Africans for careers in the growing renewable energy sector, specifically in the installation and maintenance of solar energy systems.
A Strategic Collaboration to Tackle Youth Unemployment and Energy Skills Shortages
South Africa faces a dual crisis: persistently high youth unemployment and an urgent need to transition toward renewable energy sources to combat load shedding and climate change. Sasol, a leading global integrated chemicals and energy company, is proactively addressing both through this innovative skills development initiative. The programme is fully funded and implemented in collaboration with TEDSF, an organization renowned for its education and employability programmes, and the Jobs Fund, which focuses on innovative job creation models.
Who can Apply:
- The PV Solar Training Programme supports the national energy agenda while bridging the gap between education and employment.
- It targets unemployed youth between 18 and 35 years, with a focus on previously disadvantaged individuals who have a Matric with Maths and Science or relevant N3 Electrical Engineering qualifications.
- Must be interested in career opportunities within the green energy sector (especially solar).
- Seek to enhance technical skills and employability in green energy.
- Must be available to commit to this 4-week training programme.
- Must be a resident of uMhlathuze Local Municipality
What the Programme Offers:
Participants in this programme receive accredited training in Solar PV Installation, which is aligned with South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and Energy and Water SETA requirements. The curriculum covers both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical training, empowering learners to become competent in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting solar power systems.
Key benefits include:
- Fully funded tuition and learning materials
- Monthly stipend to support learners throughout the training duration
- Exposure to real-world solar energy projects
- Opportunities for employment placement and entrepreneurship support upon completion
Selection and Training Locations
Training is conducted at approved training centres across South Africa, particularly in provinces with high solar adoption potential. Applicants go through a rigorous screening and assessment process to ensure their aptitude for the technical and safety aspects of the field.
The partnership aims to train hundreds of youth annually, with many expected to transition directly into formal employment or become independent solar technicians. This aligns with national efforts to stimulate local economies while supporting the Just Energy Transition.
