Anglo American’s Sishen Mine continues to demonstrate its commitment to education and community empowerment with the launch of its Teacher Development Programme for 2026. This transformative initiative is designed to uplift aspiring educators from key Northern Cape municipalities—Ga-Segonyana, Gamagara, Joe Morolong, Kgatelopele, Tsantsabane, and Griekwastad—by supporting their journey toward becoming qualified teachers through North-West University’s (NWU) distance learning platform.
Shaping Tomorrow’s Educators Today
The Anglo American Teacher Development Programme seeks to address the critical shortage of qualified teachers in South Africa’s rural communities by investing in local talent. By supporting the academic and professional aspirations of residents from the specified municipalities, the programme aims to build a sustainable pipeline of qualified educators who will go on to serve and strengthen their own communities.
Who Should Apply?
The programme is calling on three key groups of aspiring educators to apply:
- Grade 12 Learners
If you are currently in Grade 12 and reside in one of the targeted municipalities, and you dream of becoming a teacher, this opportunity is tailored for you. Anglo American will support successful candidates in registering for a teaching qualification via NWU’s distance learning programme. This flexible mode of study ensures that students can pursue their education while staying rooted in their communities.
- Teacher Assistants
Current Teacher Assistants with an Admission Point (AP) score between 26 and 30 are encouraged to take the next step in their careers. This programme offers the chance to transition from support roles in schools to fully qualified teaching positions through academic training with NWU.
- ECD Practitioners
Early Childhood Development (ECD) Practitioners who are passionate about advancing their skills and qualifications can also apply. Whether you’re already working in an ECD centre or looking to formalise your experience, this programme provides a structured pathway to achieving a teaching qualification via distance learning.
Why Choose NWU Distance Learning?
North-West University is one of South Africa’s leading institutions offering flexible, accredited, and high-quality distance learning programmes. Students are able to study remotely while gaining practical experience, ensuring a strong balance between theory and hands-on teaching exposure.
How to Apply
Interested applicants should submit:
- A certified copy of your Grade 12 results or most recent academic transcript
- Proof of residence within the targeted municipalities
- Certified ID copy
- AP Score evidence (where applicable)
Applications should be emailed to:
- Gosego Mangwakwe – mangwakwe@angloamerican.com
- Mpho Mohlomi – mohlomi@angloamerican.com
