Are you passionate about making a difference in the water industry while building a strong foundation for your career? uMngeni-uThukela Water, through its Training and Development Department with the support of the Operations Division, is offering an exciting Water and Waste Water Treatment Learnership Programme for 2025. This opportunity is designed to empower young South Africans with the technical skills and knowledge required to thrive in the water sector.

Programme Overview

The one-year learnership targets 20 unemployed youth who have successfully completed Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Science. It focuses on developing competence through a combination of intense theoretical learning, practical training, and on-site exposure. Candidates will attend classes, complete a Portfolio of Evidence (POE), and participate in hands-on work at the Richards Bay and Jozini Water Treatment Plants, situated in KwaZulu-Natal’s North East Region.

Learners who complete the programme will obtain a National Certificate in Water and Waste Water Treatment Practice (NQF Level 2), which is recognized across the industry and creates pathways for further studies and employment opportunities.

Who Should Apply?

This learnership is ideal for ambitious and determined matriculants who:

  • Studied Mathematics and Physical Science at matric level.
  • Are unemployed and between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Reside in deep rural areas within uMkhanyakude District and uMdoni Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Are motivated to pursue a career in water services and environmental management.

Note: The programme is not open to candidates who have completed qualifications at NQF Level 5 or higher. Applicants living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must provide:

  • Certified Matric certificate showing passes in Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • Certified copy of valid South African ID.
  • Proof of residence (for those in villages, a confirmation letter from the Traditional Authority Office – authenticity will be verified).
  • Mid-term matric school report (proof of having studied in the same district of residence).
  • A detailed CV.
  • A short motivation letter explaining why you should be selected.
  • Affidavit confirming unemployment status.
