The Department of Cooperative Governance (DCoG), through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), has opened applications for the 2026 academic year bursary programme. This prestigious funding opportunity is aimed at students who are passionate about making a difference in the fields of Disaster Management, Fire Technology, and Fire Engineering. Who Can Apply?

The NDMC bursary is open to students who have applied, been accepted, or are registered at a recognised Public Higher Education Institution in South Africa. Importantly, this bursary excludes certificate courses and PhD qualifications – focusing instead on Undergraduate, Post-Graduate Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Master’s programmes.

Undergraduate / Postgraduate / Advanced Diploma Applicants Must Submit:

  • A certified copy of their valid South African ID.
  • Recent academic results or transcript with a minimum average of 60%.
  • A certified copy of their matric certificate.
  • Proof of application, acceptance, or registration in Disaster Management, Fire Technology, or Fire Engineering.

Master’s Applicants Must Submit:

  • A certified copy of their valid South African ID.
  • A certified copy of their matric certificate.
  • A concise Curriculum Vitae (max 2 pages).
  • A recent academic transcript with a minimum average of 65%.
  • Proof of application, acceptance, or registration for a full Master’s programme in the above-mentioned fields.
  • A research proposal linked to one of NDMC’s 16 priority thematic areas (outlined in their Research Agenda document).

What Does the Bursary Cover?

The NDMC bursary offers comprehensive financial support:

  • 100% of tuition fees and registration costs.
  • Research allowance of up to R11 000 (specifically for Master’s students).

This support not only eases financial burdens but also empowers students to focus fully on their studies and contribute meaningfully to building resilience in disaster management and fire safety sectors.
