Trainee Waste Management Internship Programme for 2025

Trainee Waste Management Internship Programme for 2025

In a growing effort to promote environmental sustainability and youth employment, the Tswelopele Local Municipality has introduced an exciting Trainee Waste Management Internship Programme. This initiative offers young, motivated individuals the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in municipal waste management while contributing to cleaner, greener communities across the Free State. The programme reflects the municipality’s commitment to skills development, public health, and responsible waste management.

Empowering Youth Through Skills and Service

The Tswelopele Local Municipality, which includes the towns of Bultfontein and Hoopstad, faces increasing demands in maintaining cleanliness and managing waste in both urban and peri-urban areas. To address this, the municipality has launched this internship as a strategic intervention—bridging the gap between education and employment, especially for unemployed youth with a passion for environmental work.

Interns in this programme will receive mentorship from experienced municipal waste management officers, participate in sanitation campaigns, and contribute to environmental education in schools and communities. It’s not just a job—it’s a platform to learn and grow into roles that support the public good.

What Interns Will Learn

Interns will be exposed to a comprehensive range of skills and responsibilities, including:

  • Solid waste collection and disposal procedures
  • Waste recycling and separation techniques
  • Public health safety standards
  • Community awareness and environmental advocacy
  • Compliance with waste legislation and municipal policies

This experience helps participants understand the full waste management lifecycle, from household collection to landfill processes, with a strong emphasis on sustainable practices.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

This internship is ideal for:

  • South African youth aged between 18–35 years
  • Unemployed individuals residing within the Tswelopele Local Municipality
  • Individuals with a strong work ethic, good communication skills, and a genuine interest in community upliftment
  • Waste Management National Diploma, B-Tech Diplomas, Waste Management B Degree and other Waste Management related qualifications.
  • Willingness to learn and self-disciplined.

Duration, Stipend, and Application Process

The internship runs for 6 months, depending on the project’s funding and implementation cycle. Interns receive a monthly stipend of R5197.50, aligned with government internship guidelines, to support their transport and basic needs while undergoing training.

To apply:

  1. Submit a detailed CV with certified copies of your qualifications and ID.
  2. Include a motivational letter outlining your interest in environmental work.

Applications should be hand delivered at The Municipal Manager, PO Box 3, Bultfontein 9670
