Flavius Mareka TVET College Short Skills Training Programme for 2025

In an inspiring move aimed at tackling unemployment and improving skills among South Africans, Flavius Mareka TVET College, in collaboration with the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), is rolling out a Short Skills Training Programme pegged at NQF Level 2. This initiative is designed specifically for unemployed youth and individuals seeking to gain entry-level skills in the wholesale and retail sector — one of the largest employment sectors in South Africa.

Empowering the Unemployed through Quality Skills Training

The Short Skills Training Programme is tailored to provide practical and job-relevant training in key areas within the wholesale and retail industry. With South Africa’s unemployment rate remaining a major concern, this programme is a beacon of hope for those looking to boost their employability or start their own ventures in the informal economy.

Participants in this programme will not only acquire nationally recognised skills, but will also benefit from industry-based exposure, laying the foundation for either gainful employment or further learning. The programme targets matriculants and unemployed adults, especially those residing in areas served by Flavius Mareka TVET College campuses in the Free State Province.

What You Can Expect from the Programme:

The NQF Level 2 Short Skills Training Programme includes unit standards and modules focused on:

  • Customer service in a retail environment
  • Stock control and merchandising
  • Point of sale (POS) operations
  • Communication and teamwork in the workplace
  • Basic retail administration and ethics

All these skills are crucial for entry-level positions in the retail sector, including roles such as cashier, merchandiser, shelf packer, store assistant, and more.

This programme is ideal for:

  • Unemployed youth (18-35 years old)
  • Individuals with at least Grade 9 qualifications
  • Those passionate about working in the retail sector
  • People looking to start or grow their own informal retail businesses

Priority will be given to unemployed applicants who reside in the Flavius Mareka College catchment area. Successful applicants will receive training materials and a stipend, depending on funding availability and programme structure.
