About the organisation

FirstRand Bank India forms part of the FirstRand Group’s banking activities. The bank runs graduate development programmes designed to identify and develop the next generation of financial advisers and private bankers. Appointments are made in line with the FirstRand Group’s Employment Equity plan, and the bank supports the recruitment and advancement of individuals with disabilities. Candidates may voluntarily disclose disability information as part of their application.

What the role involves

This graduate academy is a structured learning and development programme that immerses graduates in private banking and advisory work. Over the course of the programme you will receive practical training and mentorship to develop technical, regulatory and client-engagement skills required to work with high-net-worth individuals. The programme combines classroom-style learning with on-the-job experience in wealth management, financial planning and investment strategy.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Participate in intensive training sessions on wealth management, financial planning, estate planning and investment strategy.
  • Support senior private advisors and relationship managers in delivering advice to high-net-worth clients.
  • Assist with the preparation of financial plans, investment proposals and client presentations.
  • Perform financial and investment analysis to support portfolio construction and recommendations.
  • Apply FAIS-related knowledge and adhere to compliance and regulatory requirements in all client interactions.
  • Engage in client-facing activities under supervision, building relationship and communication skills.
  • Complete assessments and performance reviews; top performers may be offered permanent positions.

Requirements explained clearly

  • Qualification: A completed FAIS-accredited NQF level 7 undergraduate degree or an NQF level 8 postgraduate qualification in one of the following fields: BCom Investments, Financial Planning, Estate Planning, Financial Management, Accounting or Economics.
  • Interest: A strong interest in a client-facing role in financial planning and wealth management is essential.
  • Location: You must be able to be based in one of the programme hubs — Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal or Cape Town — because the programme runs from these regional centres and requires on-site attendance.
  • Employment type: This is a contract-based graduate programme. Performance during the programme determines consideration for permanent employment.

Who should consider applying

Apply if you are a recent graduate or early-career professional with a FAIS-accredited finance qualification and a clear ambition to work with high-net-worth clients. This opportunity suits candidates who are numerate, client-oriented and keen to learn both technical investment concepts and the soft skills required for relationship management. If you can commit to being based in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal or Cape Town and want a structured route into private banking, this programme is for you.

Application checklist

Before you apply, prepare the following:

  • Updated CV highlighting relevant academic qualifications, internships or work experience, and any client-facing or sales experience.
  • Certified or clear scans/photos of your degree or postgraduate qualification (FAIS-accredited).
  • Brief cover letter or personal statement (1 page) explaining your interest in private banking and why you want a client-facing role.
  • Contact details for at least one referee (if requested later).
  • Proof that you can be based in one of the programme hubs (willingness to relocate, if applicable).
  • Optional: LinkedIn profile with professional summary, coursework or projects relevant to investments, financial planning or wealth management.

Edupstairs advice — make your application stand out

  • Tailor your CV: Lead with academic achievements and modules directly relevant to wealth management — investments, financial planning, estate planning, accounting or economics. Include any projects, dissertations or coursework that involved portfolio analysis or financial modelling.
  • Show client-facing potential: If you have experience in sales, tutoring, student societies, volunteer roles or internships where you engaged with people, highlight how you communicated complex information clearly and built relationships.
  • Quantify results: Where possible, quantify achievements (e.g. “analysed X investments”, “managed a budget of R…”, “increased participation by X%”). Numbers give credibility to your skills.
  • Demonstrate commercial awareness: Mention any short courses, competitions, investment clubs or reading that show your interest in markets and financial planning.
  • Prepare for assessment stages: Graduate academies often include numerical tests, case studies and interviews. Practise basic financial calculations, read recent market commentary and prepare short, structured answers about advisory scenarios.
  • Be location-ready: Clearly state your willingness to be based in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal or Cape Town. If you need to relocate, make that clear and indicate your timing.
  • Mind your presentation: Keep your CV concise (1–2 pages), error-free and easy to scan. Use a professional tone in your cover letter and ensure all documents are labelled clearly when uploaded.
