Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the Emergency Care Officer Grade 3 posts, applicants must have:
Educational & Professional Requirements
- A Senior Certificate / Grade 12
- Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) qualification
- HPCSA registration as an AEA
- Current HPCSA registration for 2025
- Unendorsed C1 driver’s licence & PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) for transporting patients
Additional Requirements
- Ability to write an assessment test and undergo a driving test
- Strong communication and patient management skills
- Understanding of EMS operations and medical rescue basics
- Knowledge of Intermediate Life Support (ILS) protocols
- Ability to apply emergency procedures under pressure
- Willingness to work in various EMS settings: Emergency ambulance, Obstetric ambulance, Communication Centre, Patient Transport Services
- Physically and mentally fit for shift work
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Emergency Care Officers will be responsible for:
- Providing Intermediate Life Support (ILS) pre-hospital treatment as per HPCSA protocols
- Responding to dispatch calls from the Communication Centre
- Ensuring quality clinical practice and maintaining CPD compliance
- Checking and maintaining vehicles, medical equipment and consumables
- Cleaning and disinfecting vehicles and stations
- Replenishing medical gases and surgical supplies
- Completing and submitting shift paperwork
- Handing over fully equipped and clean vehicles to the next shift
- Participating in quality assurance and training programmes
- Performing any additional duties assigned by supervisors
- Working flexible hours, including shifts, weekends and nights
