The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone SOC (Ltd) (RBIDZ) is committed to empowering the youth of KwaZulu-Natal by providing study assistance to deserving learners. For the 2026 academic year, the RBIDZ is inviting applications for its bursary programme, aimed at supporting talented young South Africans from disadvantaged backgrounds who have excelled in their studies.

This bursary opportunity is specifically designed for first-year students who have achieved at least 65% and above in their Grade 12 subjects and who intend to pursue full-time studies at a South African university or university of technology.

Fields of Study Covered

The RBIDZ bursary covers a wide range of disciplines critical to South Africa’s economic growth, industrial development, and community upliftment. These include:

  • Engineering: Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, Electronics, and Surveying
  • Built Environment & Energy: Architecture, Energy Solutions, Maritime, Environmental Studies, and Geology
  • Agriculture & Science: Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Environmental Sciences
  • Commerce & Finance: Economics, Accounting, Commerce, and Actuarial Science
  • Information & Digital Fields: Information Technology, Data and Computer Science
  • Creative & Social Disciplines: Supply Chain, Graphic Design, Community Development, and Social Sciences

By covering such diverse fields, the RBIDZ aims to ensure a steady pipeline of skills for both the industrial and social development needs of the province and the nation.

Eligibility and Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Residency: Only learners from KwaZulu-Natal Districts will be considered.
  2. Academic Merit: Minimum of 65% average in Grade 12 subjects.
  3. Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
  4. Background: Preference will be given to learners from previously disadvantaged communities.
  5. University Admission: Applicants must have an acceptance letter, conditional offer, or proof of application to a recognised university or university of technology.

 

 

Required Documentation

Applications must include the following certified documents (not older than 3 months):

  • Grade 12 Certificate / Mid-year Progress Report (for learners still in matric)
  • Certified copy of South African ID
  • Proof of residence (from a ward councillor or tribal authority)
  • Parent/Guardian certified ID copy
  • University acceptance/conditional offer letter
  • Parent/Guardian proof of income (salary slips, SASSA slips, or affidavit if unemployed)
  • A character reference letter from a teacher or community leader
  • A letter of motivation explaining career prospects and why RBIDZ should select you

Important Notes for Applicants

  • Application forms must be completed in full, in BLOCK LETTERS, and with black ink.
  • Incomplete or late applications will be disqualified.
  • Only applicants who meet the requirements will be shortlisted.
  • The bursary is open only to first-year students entering their studies in 2026.
