Mafube Coal (Opencast Mine) is opening doors for hands-on technical careers through its structured artisan learnerships. A 50/50 joint venture between Thungela Resources and Exxaro Resources, the mine is located 37 km east of Middelburg (Mpumalanga) and supplies coal primarily to the export market. If you’re a safety-minded, technically curious South African with Matric and N2 trade subjects, this could be your breakthrough.

What the Learnership Involves

  • Theoretical & practical training at CTC
  • On-the-job training at the mine with experienced artisans
  • Competency-based modules & assessments
  • Preparation for a trade test (you must complete all modules and assessments)

Available Learnerships & Subject Requirements (N2)

Electrician

  • Maths, Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, Electrical Trade Theory

Fitter

  • Maths, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing, Fitting & Turning Trade Theory

Instrumentation

  • Maths, Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, Instrumentation Trade Theory

Plater (Boilermaker/Plater Fabrication)

  • Maths, Engineering Science, Plater Structural Steel Drawing, Plater Trade Theory

Rigger

  • Maths, Engineering Science, Engineering Drawing, Rigging Trade Theory

Tip: Make sure your N2 certificates reflect the exact subjects listed for your chosen trade. If you’re still finalising, include proof of results/statement of results.

 

 

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) and N2 Technical qualification with the relevant trade subjects
  • Sound knowledge of Safety Systems, Regulations and Standards and a high regard for safety
  • Willing and able to work shifts, standby and call-outs when required
  • Certificate of Fitness (possession of, or able to obtain)
  • Valid driver’s license (advantageous/required as indicated)
