DIME Data Capturing Learnership Programme 2025 (Gauteng Major Townships)

South Africa’s informal economy is a powerful driver of livelihoods and local development. From spaza shops to township food stalls, millions of people depend on it daily. Yet many of these businesses remain excluded from the benefits of digital transformation and formal economic structures. The Digital Innovation for Modernising the Informal Economy (DIME) Programme seeks to change that by recruiting passionate, capable individuals for its 6-month Data Capturing Learnership Programme.

This learnership offers young people the chance to lead positive change in their communities while gaining valuable professional skills. Participants will serve as data capturing interns, playing a critical role in empowering township entrepreneurs with the knowledge, tools, and digital literacy they need to grow.

Why the DIME Learnership Matters

The DIME Programme bridges the gap between the informal and formal economy by equipping small businesses with digital skills, compliance knowledge, and sustainable practices. For interns, this is not just another short-term role—it’s a platform to make an impact. Interns will train, mentor, and support township business owners while developing their own communication, leadership, and digital expertise.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this life-changing opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate is mandatory.
  • Physical Fitness: Applicants must be agile, fit, and able to undergo physical training.
  • Community Service: Experience in volunteer or community initiatives is an added advantage.
  • Criminal Record: Must have no criminal record or pending legal cases.
  • Key Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will contribute to the modernisation of township economies through hands-on training, mentorship, and digital support. Key responsibilities include:

  • Training spaza shop owners and cooked food businesses on digital literacy, business compliance, and sustainable growth practices.
  • Facilitating workshops and community activations aligned with DIME objectives.
  • Mentoring youth participants and informal business owners within township ecosystems.
  • Promoting safe food handling, customer service standards, and digital registration.
  • Assisting with tracking training progress, submitting reports, and gathering community insights.
  • Championing financial inclusion and smarter business operations.

Location and Reach

This exciting opportunity is available across Gauteng’s major township nodes, including Soweto, Alexandra, Tembisa, Diepsloot, and surrounding areas. Applicants should ideally reside within these communities to ensure meaningful impact and local empowerment.
