The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has opened an exciting opportunity for students and unemployed graduates to apply for Examination Assistant (EA) and Quality Assurer (QA) posts for the upcoming examination cycle. With 294 posts available for Examination Assistants and 951 posts for Quality Assurers, this programme offers valuable work experience within the education sector while contributing to the integrity of South Africa’s examination system.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a recognised academic qualification: Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate, or National Senior Certificate Vocational.
  • Be a registered student at a tertiary institution, an unemployed person with at least one tertiary qualification, or an unemployed graduate.
  • Possess strong numerical skills, with Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy passed at Grade 12 level.
  • Be in their second year or above at a tertiary institution (advantageous).
  • Provide details of any previous examination administration experience, such as serving as an Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer.

The work environment is deadline-driven, requiring candidates who can work well under pressure and manage tasks efficiently.

 

 

Duties of an Examination Assistant

Examination Assistants will be based at District and Head Offices. Their responsibilities include:

  • Receiving, checking, controlling, and scanning scripts daily, and packing them for marking.
  • Ensuring the correct number of scripts and marksheets per batch, subject, and examination session are received, controlled, and packed for the correct marking venues.
  • Addressing discrepancies per subject, paper, or session.
  • Preparing marking centre files and assisting with dispatching scripts to venues.
  • Archiving and indexing scripts after marking for future retrieval.

These tasks are vital in ensuring that the administration of exams runs smoothly and securely.

Duties of a Quality Assurer

Quality Assurers will be stationed at Marking Centres, playing a crucial role in maintaining the accuracy of marking processes. Their tasks include:

  • Receiving, controlling, and distributing scripts to marking teams.
  • Ensuring the correct number of scripts and marksheets per batch during marking.
  • Controlling, distributing, and scanning scripts efficiently.
  • Verifying that all questions are marked, totals are accurate, and marks are correctly transferred to the covers and marksheets.
  • Addressing discrepancies by working with marking teams to ensure corrections are made.
  • Reconciling and arranging scripts per subject for proper archival.

This position demands attention to detail, as it safeguards the fairness and accuracy of learners’ results.
