In a world where practical skills are indispensable, the Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC) Apprenticeship Programme stands out as a powerful launchpad for young South Africans aiming to enter the technical trades. This 36‑month, hands‑on initiative is designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, with the added benefit of aligned industry experience and national accreditation.
WHAT THE PROGRAMME OFFERS
EWC’s apprenticeship is run in partnership with merSETA and appeals to learners who have completed NC(V) Level 4 qualifications in the following technical streams:
- Electrician Apprenticeship X30 Posts
- Fitter and Turner Apprenticeship X30 Posts
- Mechatronics Technician Apprenticeship X30 Posts
These apprenticeship tracks offer exposure to foundational and advanced skills — from electrical installation and motor mechanics to welding techniques and mechanical fitting. Graduates walk away with a trade certificate recognized nationally, a distinct advantage in South Africa’s growing technical job market.
STRUCTURE, DURATION & LEARNING
The structured 36‑month pathway blends:
- Work-integrated learning through placements at approved companies, ensuring on-site exposure.
- Classroom instruction and workshops anchored at Ekurhuleni West’s well-equipped facilities — including a new mechatronics workshop introduced in February
- Industry-led oversight, where experts serve as mentors and assess performance, reinforcing relevance and rigour.
This hybrid model empowers apprentices to evolve from theory to competence, building confidence and professionalism along the way.
INDUSTRY COLLABORATION & COMMUNITY IMPACT
EWC actively seeks long-term partnerships with local enterprises to reinforce its apprenticeship pipeline. The new Mechatronics Apprenticeship Programme, launched in Feb 2025, specifically calls on industry stakeholders to contribute to curriculum design and placement opportunities. These collaborations deepen educational impact while addressing critical skills shortages in the Gauteng region’s manufacturing and engineering sectors.
