BEEI Phase V Curriculum Training: Intermediate/Senior Phase Course

The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) continues to pave the way for impactful change in South Africa’s education system. Now in Phase V, beneficiaries serving as Education Assistants in Intermediate and Senior Phase classrooms have the unique opportunity to enhance their teaching support skills through the Curriculum Training Course offered by TeacherConnect in partnership with DBE-E³.

This tailored training is part of the Department of Basic Education’s ongoing commitment to building a more capable, confident, and classroom-ready education assistant workforce. Specifically designed for those working with Grades 4 to 9, the course covers essential curriculum components, practical classroom methodologies, and inclusive education strategies to equip BEEI assistants with relevant, hands-on knowledge.

Why the Curriculum Training Matters for Intermediate/Senior Phase Assistants

Intermediate and Senior Phase classrooms come with their own set of challenges—from subject complexity to adolescent development. TeacherConnect and DBE-E³ have developed this interactive, mobile-first training course to bridge the knowledge gap and strengthen assistants’ understanding of:

  • Curriculum delivery in key subjects (Maths, Natural Sciences, English, Life Orientation, and more)
  • Classroom support techniques aligned with CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement)
  • Learner engagement strategies for older learners
  • Collaborative planning with teachers to reinforce daily lesson objectives
  • Digital learning tools and how to support tech-based teaching

The training leverages accessible mobile technology via WhatsApp and the TeacherConnect platform, allowing Education Assistants to learn on-the-go, in their own time, while applying what they learn in real-time in classrooms.

What to Expect in the Course

The Intermediate/Senior Phase Curriculum Training consists of several modules that can be completed over a few days. Each module features bite-sized lessons, practical examples, quizzes, and reflection tasks to reinforce learning. Topics include:

  • Understanding the curriculum and assessment expectations
  • Planning and preparing resources for subject-specific learning
  • Supporting learners with different needs
  • Managing small group interventions and learner discipline
  • Using the DBE’s digital learning platforms to assist teachers

Upon completion, learners receive a digital certificate of completion, which can strengthen their CVs for future education sector opportunities.

How to Access the Training

All BEEI Phase V beneficiaries currently placed in Intermediate and Senior Phase classrooms are encouraged (and in some provinces, required) to complete this course.
