In collaboration with the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) Unit and the SARChI Chair in Phytomedicine, TUT is offering full-time internship positions for qualified graduates eager to contribute to innovative research in natural product and plant-based medicine.

This 12-month Laboratory Assistants Internship Programme is tailor-made for TUT Life Sciences graduates who aspire to work in research, diagnostics, quality control, and phytomedicine innovation. It provides hands-on exposure to lab practices, equipment handling, and the day-to-day operations within one of South Africa’s most respected research units.

Location: Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria
Duration: 12 months
Work Schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week)

 

 

What Interns Will Do

Interns will work closely with the Chair and Director of the SARChI in Phytomedicine Unit, providing laboratory support across various ongoing projects. Their responsibilities include:

  • Preparing chemical reagents, buffers, and plant extracts
  • Assisting with chromatographic and spectroscopic analyses
  • Monitoring laboratory equipment and ensuring proper hygiene and safety compliance
  • Logging experimental results and managing lab notebooks
  • Participating in plant-based drug discovery projects
  • Supporting postgraduate research activities

This programme provides an ideal environment to gain technical skills, scientific knowledge, and workplace discipline—crucial assets for those planning to pursue a career in biomedical or phytomedical research.

Who Should Apply?

To qualify, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • TUT Life Sciences graduate (preferably with specialization in biotechnology, microbiology, or chemistry)
  • Demonstrated interest in laboratory work or research
  • Ability to commit full-time for 12 months

  • No current employment or participation in any other internship programme
