The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Labour Activation Programme (LAP) is a new way to help South Africa fight unemployment. The UIF LAP is working with We Invest Africa (Pty) Ltd to hire unemployed people to take part in learnerships and skills programs that will change their lives by giving them knowledge, hands-on training, and the skills they need to get a job.
The goal of the program is to get 30 unemployed people to join each program, which will last for 12 months and include structured training. The goal of these programs is to fill skill gaps in important areas like agriculture, construction, environmental practices, ICT, and entrepreneurship. They do this by giving participants the qualifications and hands-on experience they need to get jobs or start their own businesses.
Learnerships
The learnerships are approved by SAQA and lead to qualifications that are recognized all over the country. Participants will learn in the classroom and on the job:
- National Certificate: Mixed Farming Systems — NQF Level 2
- National Certificate: Plant Production — NQF Level 3
- National Certificate: Landscaping — NQF Level 2
- National Certificate: Animal Production — NQF Level 2
- National Certificate: Construction Roadworks — NQF Level 3
- National Certificate: Building Health and Safety — NQF Level 3
- National Certificate: Building a Community House — NQF Level 2
- National Certificate: Process Control for Water and Wastewater — NQF Level 3
These qualifications give students both technical skills and the ability to work, which makes them competitive in the job market.
Skills Programs
The UIF LAP also has skills programs to help people improve their business, trade, and workplace skills for those who want more focused, shorter-term training. These are some of the things they help with:
- Entrepreneurship,
- Professional driving,
- Farming (including poultry farming and horticulture),
- Construction health and safety,
- Plumbing and bricklaying,
- Environmental practices,
- Hygiene and cleaning,
- Customer service,
- Plastering,
- End user computing,
- and solar installation.
These skill sets are useful for both finding a job and starting your own business, especially in fields that are important for South Africa’s social and economic growth.
Requirements at the very least
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen with a valid ID copy
- Be currently unemployed
- Be between the ages of 18 and 55
- Have at least a Grade 10 or higher qualification
- Show interest in the construction/building sector (priority area)
- Not be currently enrolled in another learnership or skills program

Why Should You Apply?

Oh nice, this programme will help me gain practical skills and a recognised qualification that improves my chances of finding stable employment. It also gives me the opportunity to enter fields like construction, farming, or solar installation where there is growing demand for skilled workers.
