Nkangala TVET College, in partnership with the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority (FP&M SETA), has officially launched an exciting Artisan Training Programme aimed at equipping 100 unemployed youth with critical artisan skills. This collaboration reflects a strong commitment to South Africa’s national goal of expanding access to skills development and reducing unemployment through practical, accredited vocational education.
Skills for a Modern Economy
The Artisan Training Programme is designed to respond directly to industry needs within the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing sectors. These sectors are crucial to the South African economy, encompassing textiles, clothing, printing, packaging, pulp and paper, and furniture manufacturing. The programme will empower learners with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on technical training, thereby preparing them to meet the demands of employers and entrepreneurial opportunities alike.
Participants will benefit from structured training led by qualified artisans and accredited instructors, covering disciplines such as mechanical fitting, welding, electrical work, textile machinery operation, and general maintenance. By aligning the training content with FP&M SETA standards, the programme ensures that graduates receive qualifications that are recognized nationally and are relevant to workplace expectations.
Aspiring Artisans will be trained in the following trades:
- Mechanical Fitters
- Millwright
- Boilermaker
- Electrical
- Welder
Who Can Apply?
The programme is targeted at South African youth who have Grade 9. Priority is given to unemployed individuals who are passionate about working with their hands and committed to a career in the artisan trades. Preference may also be extended to those residing within the Nkangala District Municipality and surrounding areas to promote local employment and community development.
Applicants must demonstrate a willingness to participate in both classroom learning and practical workshop activities. Since the training includes on-site exposure and mentorship opportunities, discipline and a strong work ethic are essential.
Benefits of the Programme:
Participants in the Nkangala TVET College and FP&M SETA Artisan Training Programme will receive:
- Fully funded training including tuition, workshop materials, and protective equipment.
- Monthly stipends to assist with transport and basic living costs.
- Accredited certification upon successful completion of the programme.
- Exposure to real-world technical environments, increasing employability and confidence.

This initiative is not just a training opportunity but a stepping stone towards economic self-sufficiency. It plays a critical role in addressing the country’s artisan shortage, empowering individuals with lifelong skills that are in demand across multiple industries.
