What Is the iMas Insurance Learnership Programme?

The programme is being offered through iMas Insurance Brokers, which operates in the financial-services and insurance sector.

Unlike an ordinary entry-level job where applicants may already be expected to possess experience, a learnership combines structured theoretical learning with practical workplace experience.

For an unemployed Matric applicant, this can therefore provide three important things at the same time:

formal learning + workplace experience + an NQF Level 4 insurance qualification

The programme also includes workplace coaching and mentoring.

There are separate opportunities covering long-term insurance and short-term insurance, so applicants should understand the difference before choosing where to apply.

  1. Long-Term Insurance Learnership – Centurion

The first opportunity is based in Centurion, Gauteng.

This programme focuses on Long-Term Insurance (Life Insurance) and provides learners with practical exposure to sales and/or administration within the long-term insurance environment.

Programme Benefits

Successful learners can receive:

  • practical experience in Sales and/or Administration within Long-Term Insurance;
  • structured theoretical training;
  • workplace coaching and mentoring;
  • a 12-month fixed-term contract;
  • a monthly allowance of R6,000; and
  • an Insurance Qualification at NQF Level 4 after successful completion.

Applicants interested in the Centurion opportunity can apply for the iMas Long-Term Insurance Learnership in Centurion.

  1. Long-Term Insurance Learnership – Secunda

A second Long-Term Insurance Learnership is available in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

The structure is similar to the Centurion Long-Term Insurance programme.

Learners will receive practical exposure to sales and/or administration in the long-term insurance environment while completing structured theoretical learning and workplace coaching.

The programme runs for 12 months and carries a R6,000 monthly allowance.

Candidates based in or able to participate in the programme in Mpumalanga can apply for the iMas Long-Term Insurance Learnership in Secunda.

  1. Short-Term Insurance Learnership – Centurion

The third opportunity is the Short-Term Insurance (Non-Life) Learnership in Centurion.

This programme is particularly relevant to applicants interested in customer-facing insurance careers.

Learners will receive practical exposure to telesales and/or customer service within a call-centre environment.

The programme includes:

  • practical workplace experience;
  • structured theoretical training;
  • on-the-job coaching and mentoring;
  • a 12-month fixed-term contract;
  • a R6,000 monthly allowance; and
  • an Insurance Qualification at NQF Level 4 following successful completion.

Candidates interested in this pathway can apply for the iMas Short-Term Insurance Learnership in Centurion.

What Is the Difference Between Long-Term and Short-Term Insurance?

Applicants should not assume that all insurance work is the same.

Long-term insurance generally relates to financial risks and products covering longer periods or life events. The field can include areas associated with life insurance and related financial-protection products.

Short-term or non-life insurance generally relates to the protection of assets and other risks through insurance products that may cover vehicles, property and other insurable risks.

The actual work performed by a learner will depend on the programme, workplace and responsibilities assigned by iMas Insurance Brokers.

For these particular opportunities, the advertised Long-Term Insurance learnership provides practical experience in sales and/or administration, while the Short-Term Insurance programme specifically mentions telesales and/or customer service in a call-centre environment.

What Will Learners Learn?

The learnership is not limited to selling insurance products.

Participants will gain exposure to areas including:

  • basic research;
  • literacy and numeracy within an insurance context;
  • insurance risk assessment;
  • personal financial management;
  • understanding financial risk;
  • insurance legislation;
  • ethics;
  • compliance; and
  • operating within a regulated insurance environment.

These competencies are relevant because financial services is a highly regulated industry.

Someone working with customers, financial products or insurance information needs more than sales ability. They also need to understand compliance, ethical conduct, risk and responsible customer service.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the requirements stipulated by iMas Insurance Brokers.

You need:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Accounting;
  • to be currently unemployed;
  • not to be registered for another course of study;
  • not to be participating in another learnership;
  • not to be participating in an internship;
  • not to be participating in a YES Programme; and
  • to be available to start the programme immediately.

The Mathematics and/or Accounting requirement is particularly important.

Applicants should check their Matric certificate or statement of results before applying rather than assuming that any Grade 12 qualification will qualify.

Who Is the Programme Targeting?

According to iMas Insurance Brokers, the opportunity is intended for unemployed individuals from previously disadvantaged and designated groups who want to build careers in the insurance industry.

The employer also states that preference will be given to candidates from designated groups and candidates with disabilities.

Applicants should nevertheless assess themselves against all of the advertised requirements before submitting an application.

Skills iMas Is Looking For

Meeting the educational requirements does not necessarily mean that every candidate will be selected.

iMas is looking for applicants who demonstrate qualities and competencies including:

  • strong verbal communication;
  • strong written communication;
  • attention to detail;
  • customer-service orientation;
  • integrity;
  • self-motivation;
  • time-management ability;
  • ability to work under pressure;
  • selling ability;
  • negotiation skills; and
  • commitment to high standards of quality.

These skills make sense within an insurance environment.

Insurance employees may interact with customers, explain products, capture information accurately, handle documentation, work with regulated processes and meet service or sales targets.

Why This Opportunity May Be Valuable for Matric Applicants

One of the challenges facing unemployed Matric holders is the familiar cycle: You need experience to get a job, but you need a job to gain experience.

A structured learnership can help bridge that gap.

Instead of receiving only classroom instruction, learners receive workplace exposure alongside formal learning.

In this case, successful completion is also expected to lead to an Insurance Qualification at NQF Level 4.

Applicants who want to understand how NQF levels and South African qualifications work can use the Edupstairs Career & Qualification Explorer to investigate careers, SAQA qualifications, NQF levels and career-to-qualification pathways.

The Edupstairs database currently brings together more than 22,000 qualification records and over 1,500 South African OFO careers, making it useful for applicants who want to investigate what comes after a learnership.

Explore Insurance Careers Before You Apply

Do not apply simply because the programme provides R6,000 per month.

Consider whether the industry itself interests you.

Insurance can involve career areas such as:

  • insurance sales;
  • customer service;
  • claims;
  • underwriting;
  • insurance administration;
  • risk;
  • compliance;
  • financial advice;
  • brokerage;
  • client servicing; and
  • management.

If you are uncertain about the kind of work that fits your interests, complete the free Edupstairs Career Discovery assessment.

The assessment explores occupational interests and suggests careers that may align with your interest profile.

You can then use the Career & Qualification Explorer to investigate relevant occupations and qualifications in greater detail.

Insurance Applicants Should Explore INSETA

Insurance has its own important place within South Africa’s SETA system.

Applicants interested in this programme should explore the Edupstairs SETA Platform, which brings together all 21 South African SETAs and more than 1,000 programme and pathway records.

The particularly relevant SETA for this career field is the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA).

INSETA covers skills-development pathways associated with areas including:

  • short-term insurance;
  • long-term insurance;
  • reinsurance;
  • underwriting;
  • claims;
  • risk management;
  • financial advice;
  • investments; and
  • retirement funds.

Applicants can therefore use the SETA Platform to investigate insurance-sector programmes and qualifications beyond this particular iMas intake.

For example, Edupstairs’ INSETA catalogue includes pathways such as the Insurance Broker and SME Development Programme and insurance-related qualification pathways.

This is useful because the objective should not simply be to obtain one learnership. It should be to understand how that learnership can form part of a longer career.

Investigate Accredited Training Providers

Applicants researching occupational training can also use the Edupstairs QCTO Accredited Provider Database.

The database allows users to search active QCTO accreditation records for Skills Development Providers and Assessment Centres and filter providers according to province.

This can be particularly useful when you later investigate occupational qualifications or additional skills programmes.

However, do not assume that a provider appearing in the QCTO database is involved in the iMas learnership. The provider database is an independent career-research resource.

What If You Want to Study Further?

Completing a learnership does not mean that your education has to stop at NQF Level 4.

You could later investigate further qualifications in areas such as:

  • insurance;
  • financial planning;
  • business management;
  • accounting;
  • finance;
  • economics;
  • risk management;
  • marketing;
  • sales;
  • customer relationship management; or
  • related business fields.

Prospective students can compare South African higher-education options through the Edupstairs University Explorer.

Those considering vocational or occupational routes can use the TVET College Explorer, which covers all 50 public TVET colleges in South Africa and provides information on programmes, campuses, requirements and application resources.

The important principle is to think beyond the immediate opportunity:

Matric → learnership → NQF Level 4 qualification → workplace experience → further study or skills development → insurance career progression

Edupstairs Advice

This opportunity deserves attention from unemployed Matric holders interested in the insurance and financial-services industry.

The R6,000 monthly allowance is attractive, but the more important long-term value is the combination of an NQF Level 4 qualification, structured training and practical workplace exposure.

If you apply, think beyond the 12 months.

Ask yourself: What could I build from this experience?

You could potentially use the programme as the first stage of a career in insurance sales, administration, customer service, underwriting, claims, financial services, risk or related fields.

Research the industry through the SETA Platform. Explore careers and qualifications. Identify further-study opportunities. Build your CV. Learn how regulated financial services operate.

And most importantly, do not rely on one application.

Apply for iMas if you qualify, but continue applying for other legitimate learnerships, internships, skills programmes and entry-level opportunities.
