Gert Sibande TVET College & ETDP SETA: Coded Welding Skills Programme 2025/2026

The ETDP SETA Mpumalanga provincial office, in collaboration with Gert Sibande TVET College, is providing unemployed South African youth with a golden opportunity to gain practical technical skills through the Coded Welding Occupational Skills Programme. This initiative is designed for individuals who are energetic, motivated, and eager to pursue a career in welding and engineering.

About the Programme

The Coded Welding Skills Programme equips learners with the ability to operate as certified Coded Welders. Participants will learn to produce welds that meet industry-approved standards while applying the relevant safety protocols and engineering principles. With both theoretical and practical training, learners will master welding procedures that ensure durability and quality in real-world applications.

The training further emphasizes visual, non-destructive, and destructive testing of welds. By the end of the six-month course, participants will be skilled enough to meet the acceptance criteria set by welding codes, gaining the technical expertise needed to enter the job market confidently.

Minimum Entry Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet at least one of the following:

  • NCV Level 3 / N3 in Mechanical Engineering or Welding OR Grade 11 with passes in Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • Prior welding exposure or completion of a basic welding course will be considered an advantage.
  • Strong physical fitness, hand-eye coordination, and technical aptitude.
  • Candidates must not be enrolled in another programme during training.

For added competitiveness, applicants with NCV Level 4 or N4 qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, Welding/Engineering and Related Design, or Grade 12 with passes in Mathematics and Physical Science will be preferred.

Duration and Benefits

The programme spans six months, blending classroom theory and practical application. To support learners financially, participants will receive a monthly stipend of R3,000. This ensures that students can focus on developing their skills without financial strain.

Application Process

Interested candidates are required to submit the following:

  • Certified copy of their ID.
  • Certified copy of Grade 11 or 12 results with Mathematics and Physical Science OR Mechanical Engineering NCV/N4 certificates.
  • All certifications must be issued within the last six months.

Applications must be submitted physically at the Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre, No. 2 Tambourine Avenue, Standfield Hill, Standerton.

Why This Opportunity Matters

This programme not only empowers unemployed youth with scarce technical skills but also helps bridge South Africa’s skills gap in welding and engineering. Welding remains a critical skill across industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy—offering learners valuable career prospects upon completion of this course.
