DFFE EPWP Graduate Programme Support Officers

 

In an effort to empower South African graduates and bridge the gap between academic qualifications and real-world experience, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) continues to implement its Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Graduate Programme. This initiative recruits Support Officers to contribute to environmental conservation and sustainability efforts while gaining vital workplace experience.

WHAT IS THE EPWP GRADUATE PROGRAMME?

The EPWP Graduate Programme is a government-led skills development and employment initiative under the broader EPWP framework. It targets unemployed graduates, providing them with structured work opportunities in public sector projects. Within the DFFE, the programme plays a critical role in supporting environmental projects, research, and community-based natural resource management programmes.

THE ROLE OF GRADUATE SUPPORT OFFICERS

Graduate Support Officers are placed across various operational units within the department—such as forestry, fisheries management, environmental protection, waste management, biodiversity, climate change, and ecological infrastructure. Their roles include:

  • Administrative support for departmental projects
  • Data collection and environmental reporting
  • Fieldwork and community engagement
  • Assisting with policy implementation and research
  • Supporting monitoring and evaluation processes

This makes it a hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience in a range of areas aligned with South Africa’s sustainable development goals.

 

 

WHO CAN APPLY?

To qualify for the programme, applicants typically need:

  • A relevant national diploma or degree in public administration/management or related qualification. No experience required. Knowledge and understanding of the Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations and Treasury Practice Note.
  • Knowledge of administrative/clerical procedures, financial, procurement procedures, departmental procedures, and prescript/policies.
  • Coordination and stakeholder management; Interpersonal; organizational, facilitation and coordination skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Good understanding of government planning processes.
  • Ability to work under pressure, work with difficult people, be responsible and loyal, be honest and reliable, work long hours voluntarily, and ability work with limited supervision.
  • Computer literacy and end-user knowledge of Microsoft packages.

The programme prioritizes equity by giving preference to youth, women, and persons with disabilities.

DUTIES:

  • Render support for Provincial administrative and other report consolidation and processing. Support the compilation of provincial advocacy reports.
  • Support the compilation of environmental education reports and organize and distribute environmental education and awareness promotional materials.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports; and Create and maintain filing systems for relevant activities
  • Provide logistical support; Facilitate traveling arrangements; Leave management; Process S&T and Kilometre claims.
  • Provide administrative and secretariat support for relevant forums, meetings and committees.
  • Assist with the procurement of goods and services
