The City of Cape Town is committed to empowering its residents by offering a variety of training and skills development opportunities designed to prepare participants for the world of work. These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between education and employment, particularly for unemployed graduates, students, and young people eager to enhance their employability.

Through its comprehensive range of programmes – including the Graduate Internship Programme, Learnerships, Skills Programmes, and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) – the City provides practical work experience, mentorship, and industry-specific training.

Who Can Apply?

Suitably qualified candidates who reside in Cape Town and meet the minimum requirements for each programme are encouraged to apply. The City also maintains a Graduate/Student Database where interested applicants can register for future opportunities.

1. Graduate Internship Programme

Graduate Internship Programme (GIP)- Fixed Term Contract

Requirements:

  • A three-year Diploma/National Diploma (from a registered University or University of Technology) or from accredited academic institution of higher learning.
  • Advanced Diploma/ B-tech
  • Degree
  • Honours
  • Masters
  • PhD

The City offers graduate internship programmes to graduate students who have completed their qualification at an Institution of Higher Learning (University/ University of Technology). The programme may be either part time or full time for the purpose of skills transfer.

 

 

2. Learnerships

The City offers vocational education and training programmes to facilitate the linkage between structured learning and work experience in order to obtain a registered qualification. It combines theory and workplace practice into a qualification that is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Learnerships can run from 12 up to 24 months.

Requirements:

  • Grade 12/Matric
  • Additional requirements may vary depending on the type of learnership

3. Skills Programme

Skills Programme- Fixed Term Contract

  • This programme is aimed at those in possession of Grade 10/11 or a National Senior Certificate (Grade12/Matric)/ N1 – N5/ Level 2 -4).
  • It gives you practical exposure and aims to provide structured practical learning opportunities.

The Skills Programme has a quarterly intake of candidate throughout the year.

4. Work Integrated Learning

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) – Fixed Term Contract

Requirements:

  • National Certificate – N6 (WIL/In-service Training)
  • Institutions of Higher Learning – Letter from the Institution requesting WIL (in-service training), Transcript (Academic results)

The City offers a programme which integrates academic learning with its application in the workplace where such learning is a specific requirement to obtain a formal qualification. This work experience is usually defined, with clear learning outcomes and is formally known as In-service Training.

Students may be involved in special projects and receive remuneration or no remuneration depending on budget availability.

The stipends may range from R32,91 per hour to R51,73 per hour.

 

 

How to register

Step 1: To register for an internship online, you will first need to register for e-Services and activate the careers service.

Step 2: Once you have activated the service, you will need to create an online CV and fill in your personal details, education and training, work experience, and qualifications.

Please include a digital copy of:

  • A South African Identity Document/South African Citizenship (no affidavits will be accepted);
  • A cover letter;
  • Qualifications, such as a matric certificate, diploma or degree; and
  • Any references.

Step 3: Once you have created your online CV, visit our job search app and look for the internship you want to register for. Use the search filters so that the jobs in the results section match your specific skill set.
