About the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR)

The Railway Safety Regulator is a key public entity established under the Railway Safety Act No. 30 of 2024. Their job is simple but extremely important:

Make sure all railway operations in South Africa are safe.

RSR oversees and enforces safety compliance across:

  • Passenger rail operators
  • Freight rail companies
  • Cross-border rail operations from neighbouring countries
  • Maintenance, engineering and infrastructure units
  • Railway contractors and service providers

When South Africans travel by train — or goods move across the country — RSR ensures safety standards are followed.

This makes the RSR one of South Africa’s most strategic public entities. And by funding students through this bursary, they are investing in the country’s future engineers, safety specialists, auditors, IT experts and leaders.
