About Emfuleni Local Municipality
Emfuleni Local Municipality is one of Gauteng’s key economic hubs, located along the Vaal River and home to communities such as Vanderbijlpark, Sebokeng, Evaton, Vereeniging, Sharpeville and others.
The municipality invests heavily in youth development, education, and economic empowerment.
Through the Mayoral Bursary Programme, Emfuleni aims to:
- Develop local talent
- Support disadvantaged families
- Equip the local economy with critical and scarce skills
- Encourage youth access to higher education
This bursary is one of the municipality’s flagship interventions to uplift young people and build a skilled, future-ready workforce.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify for the Emfuleni Local Municipality Bursary 2026, applicants must:
- Academic Requirements
- Must have passed Grade 12 with a minimum 60% average
- Must be entering first year of study in 2026
- Must have proof of admission to a recognised tertiary institution
- Residency
- Must be a resident of Emfuleni Local Municipality
- Must provide a testimonial letter from the high school where they matriculated
- Financial Need
- Priority given to learners from disadvantaged households
- Families registered on the municipal indigent database get first preference
- Total household income must not exceed R350 000 per year
- Study Fields Considered
Bursaries will be awarded in the following areas:
- Commerce
- Law
- Technical Skills (Electrical, Civil, Chemical Engineering, etc.)
- Human and Social Sciences
- Science and Technology
- Any other Scarce and Critical Skills identified by Emfuleni
Preference is given to local institutions of higher learning, followed by Potchefstroom, Mahikeng, and Gauteng-based institutions.

What the Bursary Covers
The Emfuleni Mayoral Bursary provides full financial support, including:
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Laptop
- Textbooks
- Accommodation and meals (only for selected students)
Students already funded by another bursary or financial aid scheme will NOT be considered.
Students who change their study programme after approval may forfeit their funding.
