The Wool Industry Bursary Trust, managed by Cape Wools SA, is inviting applications from young South Africans interested in pursuing studies within the agricultural and wool industries. This bursary aims to grow new skills and support careers in agriculture, wool production, processing, export, and textile/fashion design with a focus on wool.
About the Bursary
The Wool Industry Bursary Trust was established with seed funding from the Pecci Family and support from the Wool Trust to provide financial assistance to deserving students. It offers young people an opportunity to study at tertiary institutions and prepare themselves for meaningful careers in the South African wool industry and related fields.
Requirements
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens.
- Meet all admission requirements of the institution they plan to study at.
- Provide academic results and progress reports when required.
- Submit all supporting documentation, including ID and proof of residence.
Preference will be given to:
- Students at Agricultural Colleges (50% of funding allocation).
- Students pursuing fashion and textile design with a wool focus.
- Previously disadvantaged individuals (60% of funds earmarked).
- Students in third year and above (Honours, Masters, or PhD in wool/sheep focused studies).
At Grootfontein Agricultural College, 1st and 2nd year students may qualify if they commit to specialising in wool studies in their 3rd year.
What the Bursary Covers
Funding may cover the following:
- Registration and tuition fees
- Books and material fees
- Accommodation fees
Additional support of up to R20 000 per student is available for practical on-farm training, where required by the institution.
Responsibilities of Recipients
Bursary holders are expected to:
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress each semester.
- Undertake holiday work on active wool farms for up to four weeks per year.
- Ensure their final projects (fashion or textile students) include at least 50% wool.
- Seek employment in the wool industry for 12 months for every year of bursary funding received.
- Disclose any other bursary income.
