Eastern Cape Agriculture Bursary Programme for 2026

 

 

The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture is once again opening doors for aspiring young South Africans through its Bursary Programme for the 2026 Academic Year. This opportunity is aimed at unemployed youth and matriculants, as well as those currently in Grade 12 or NCV, who dream of pursuing studies in critical agricultural and veterinary fields. The programme is designed not only to fund higher education but also to build a pipeline of skilled professionals who will contribute to the province’s agricultural development.

Fields of Study Covered

The bursary supports undergraduate studies in the following specialized fields:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agricultural Engineering / Bio-Resource Engineering
  • Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) in Veterinary Technology

These fields are key in addressing food security, sustainable farming practices, animal health, and bio-resource management within the Eastern Cape and the broader agricultural sector.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen, with preference given to unemployed youth from the Eastern Cape and historically disadvantaged groups.
  • Hold a Grade 12/Matric/NCV certificate (or be currently studying towards it) with the relevant subject combinations:
    • Mathematics and Physical Science for Agricultural Engineering or Bio-Resource Engineering.
    • Life Science, Mathematics, and Physical Science for Veterinary Technology.
  • Provide proof of admission, provisional admission, or registration at a registered higher education institution.
  • Submit proof of residence (not older than 3 months) from the local municipality.
  • Meet the household income requirements:
    • R350 000 or less per year for general applicants.
    • R600 000 or less per year for applicants with disabilities.
  • Provide proof of household income, affidavit on financial status, and copies of parent/guardian ID documents.

Applicants must also disclose if they are receiving support from another funding organisation.

 

 

What the Bursary Covers

The bursary is comprehensive and covers:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Prescribed textbooks

It’s important to note that no historical debt will be covered. Successful candidates will be expected to work for the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture upon graduation, for a period equivalent to the duration of their funded studies.
