The University of Fort Hare is offering an exciting Supply Chain Management (SCM) Internship Programme – a 12-month developmental opportunity designed for graduates who are passionate about building careers in public sector procurement and logistics. About the Programme

Interns will rotate across the four core SCM sections, ensuring a well-rounded experience of the entire supply chain value chain in a university environment. From procurement planning to contract management and travel coordination, interns will gain both practical skills and theoretical grounding in the systems and processes that keep a large institution functioning effectively.

This programme is particularly suited to graduates who wish to enter the public sector, where compliance with legislation, accountability, and efficiency are essential. It offers an opportunity to contribute to institutional operations while learning from seasoned professionals.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following:

  • A Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Procurement, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related qualification (NQF 6/NQF 7).
  • No prior work experience required – ideal for new graduates.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Visio).

Skills Needed:

  • Strong problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent communication and report writing.
  • Keen attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Professionalism, confidentiality, and interpersonal skills.
  • Negotiation and assertiveness skills.

Added Advantage:

  • Prior workplace exposure in procurement or SCM (not compulsory).
  • Familiarity with ERP or procurement systems.

 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Interns will work under supervision but will actively participate in meaningful tasks across all SCM functions:

Procurement & Demand Management

  • Assist in preparing procurement plans and demand forecasts.
  • Support end-users with procurement requests and specifications.
  • Help maintain demand management records and assist with needs analysis processes.

Tender & Contract Management

  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and filing contracts.
  • Help prepare RFQs, tenders, and bid documentation.
  • Attend bid specification and evaluation meetings as an observer.
  • Track contract expiry/renewal dates and maintain the contracts register.
  • Ensure supplier compliance with service level agreements.

Travel Coordination

  • Assist in processing travel requisitions in line with the university’s travel policy.
  • Support bookings for academic and administrative travel.
  • Maintain accurate travel records and reconcile documentation.

General Administration

  • Provide administrative assistance across SCM functions.
  • File and manage SCM documentation according to record-keeping policies.
  • Participate in team meetings, audits, and internal reviews.
