About the Umthombo Youth Development Foundation (UYDF)

The Umthombo Youth Development Foundation (UYDF) is a respected South African non-profit organisation dedicated to developing healthcare professionals from rural areas.

Founded to address the shortage of medical and allied health practitioners in underserved communities, UYDF supports rural youth through:

  • Practical work exposure at rural hospitals

UYDF’s model has become one of the most successful rural health development programmes in the country — empowering young people while strengthening the healthcare system in marginalised communities.

Fields Covered: What You Can Study with the UYDF Bursary

UYDF is offering bursaries for students pursuing Health Science degrees, including:

  • Audiology
  • Dentistry
  • Dental Therapy
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Radiography / Ultrasonography
  • Speech and Language Therapy

These programmes must be undertaken at a public South African university (excluding UNISA).

What the UYDF Bursary Covers (Benefits & Support)

This bursary is specifically designed for students who have already secured or applied for NSFAS and require additional top-up support.

You will receive:

Additional financial support to cover costs not fully covered by NSFAS.

  • Academic & Social Mentorship

Professional mentoring to help you overcome academic and personal challenges.

Note: Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a ZOOM interview between January and February 2026.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements: Who Should Apply?

To qualify for the 2026 UYDF Bursary, applicants must meet the following:

Residency Requirements

You must be from one of the following KwaZulu-Natal districts:

  • uMkhanyakude District
    • Bethesda
    • Hlabisa
    • Manguzi
    • Mosvold
    • Mseleni
  • Zululand District
    • Benedictine
    • Ceza
    • Itshelejuba
    • Nkonjeni
    • Vryheid
  • King Cetshwayo District
    • Catherine Booth
    • Ekombe
    • KwaMagwaza
    • Mbongolwane
    • Nkandla

School Requirements

  • Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric at a Quintile 1–3 rural, non-fee-paying school.

Academic Requirements

  • Must be studying or planning to study one of the approved Health Science qualifications.
  • Must have been accepted into a public university (excluding UNISA).
  • Must be entering 1st or 2nd year of study in 2026.
  • Must be studying toward a first degree.

Financial Requirements

  • Must have NSFAS funding or proof of NSFAS application and acceptance for 2026.

Commitment Requirement

  • Must be willing to work for at least two years at one of the participating rural hospitals.

  1. Does the UYDF Bursary cover all study costs?

No. It provides top-up funding for NSFAS recipients and additional support such as mentoring and work exposure.

  1. Can students from outside KwaZulu-Natal apply?

No. Only students from specific KZN rural districts may apply.

  1. Does the bursary cover final-year students?

No. Only 1st and 2nd year students are eligible for 2026.

  1. Can UNISA students apply?

No. UNISA is excluded from this bursary opportunity.

  1. Is there a work-back obligation after graduation?

Yes. Successful applicants must work at one of the specified rural hospitals for two years.
