About the Southern African Transport Conference (SATC)

The Southern African Transport Conference (SATC) is the region’s most influential annual transport forum, attracting more than 700 industry experts, researchers, engineers and policymakers each year. Established as a hub for cutting-edge research and collaboration, SATC promotes innovative transport solutions that address Southern Africa’s most pressing mobility challenges.

In recent years, SATC has focused heavily on sustainable transport, digital transformation, infrastructure development, public mobility systems, and the integration of modern technologies into traditional transport networks. Its mission is to create a platform where new ideas are developed, tested, debated and shared—ultimately shaping the future of transport in the region.

Fields Covered

The SATC Bursary 2026 supports exceptional students pursuing a:

  • Master’s research component in Transportation
  • Doctoral research component in Transportation

The programme is designed to strengthen academic research in the transport sector and ensure a steady pipeline of highly skilled professionals who can lead innovation, policy development and real-world transport solutions across Southern Africa.

Bursary Value, Payment and Renewal

Successful applicants will receive: R170 000 (tax-free)

Paid directly to the university in two equal instalments:

  • 50% in February 2026
  • 50% in July 2026

Funding for One Academic Year

The bursary is renewable annually, based on satisfactory academic progress and progress in your research.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements

You must meet all of the following to apply:

Citizenship

  • Be a South African citizen, OR
  • Be a citizen of any SADC country (16 member states including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, DRC, Angola, Mozambique, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros).

Field of Study

  • You must be studying full-time towards a Master’s (M) or Doctoral (D) research qualification in Transportation.

Institution

  • You must be enrolled at a recognised South African university.

Funding Status

  • You cannot already be receiving any other bursary, scholarship, grant or financial award.

Application Requirements

  • Agree to all conditions on the SATC application form.
  • Submit all required supporting documents.

  • Recent head-and-shoulders photograph
  • Certified copy of your Matric Certificate
  • Certified copies of any professional membership certificates (if applicable)
  • Certified copies of degree certificates and full academic transcripts

  1. Can part-time students apply?

No. The SATC bursary only supports full-time postgraduate research students.

  1. Does the bursary cover coursework Master’s programmes?

No. It only covers research components for Master’s or Doctoral studies in Transportation.

  1. Can I apply if I already have another bursary?

Unfortunately not. No double funding is allowed.

  1. How is the bursary paid?

Funds are paid directly to your university, not to the student.

  1. Can international students outside the SADC region apply?

No. Only students from SADC member countries may apply.
