South Africa’s youth unemployment remains a pressing national concern, particularly for fresh graduates whose qualifications often remain theoretical. In response, South Cape TVET College, in strategic collaboration with the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA), is pioneering a Graduate Placement Internship Programme aimed at closing the historic gap between academic attainment and workplace readiness.
The Power of Partnership
ETDP SETA, mandated by the Skills Development Act, aligns training with industry needs—especially in education, training, and development. Leveraging this mandate, South Cape TVET College offers eligible graduates—typically South African, unemployed, age 18–35, with diplomas or degrees—a two-year internship that provides structured workplace exposure, valuable mentorship, and a stipend. This initiative reflects ETDP SETA’s broader strategy to improve employability via Graduate and Student Internships.

College Benefits & Institutional Growth
This partnership supports the college’s strategic vision: to deliver “quality and relevant teaching and learning in a supportive environment”. By hosting and training interns, South Cape TVET College bolsters its internal capacity, nurtures future educators and support staff, and deepens its roots in the community. The internships also align with its mission to “increase the number of students adequately prepared for the labour market or further study”.
A Blueprint for Success
Building on national SETA frameworks and successful programmes in Limpopo, Waterberg, Lephalale, and Central Johannesburg, South Cape TVET College is tailoring a bespoke internship model that builds on proven best practices. Steps include:
- Promotional campaigns across campuses to attract eligible applicants.
- Structured application and screening, ensuring interns meet SETA requirements.
- Onboarding with clear objectives, expectations, and mentoring assignments.
- Ongoing tracking and evaluation: interns produce reports, receive performance feedback, and attend facilitated training sessions.
- Post-internship outcomes: the college supports alumni in securing permanent positions within the education sector or continuing to higher study.
Looking Ahead: Sustainable Impact
This programme goes beyond individual development. By equipping graduates with workplace competence, it supports broader goals of social upliftment and skills development in the Garden Route. As internships conclude, both the interns and the institution emerge stronger—graduates gain employable confidence, and South Cape TVET College enhances its reputation as a “world‑class institution for technical and vocational education”, readying its students for real-world success .
