This additional break is scheduled from Monday, April 28, to Friday, May 2, 2025, effectively granting a full week off during the second term.​

Origins of the Special Holiday Week

The inception of this special holiday week stems from the alignment of several public holidays. Freedom Day, traditionally observed on April 27, falls on a Sunday in 2025. According to the Public Holidays Act of 1994, when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is also recognized as a public holiday. Consequently, Monday, April 28, is designated as a public holiday. Additionally, Workers’ Day is observed on Thursday, May 1. To bridge the days between these holidays, the DBE has declared Tuesday, April 29; Wednesday, April 30; and Friday, May 2, as special school holidays. This decision effectively creates a continuous week-long break for public schools.

Implications for the Academic Calendar

The inclusion of this special holiday week increases the total number of school holidays in 2025 to 27, up from 25 in 2024. Despite this increase, the academic year maintains 200 school days, aligning with the DBE’s commitment to preserving instructional time. The term dates for 2025 are as follows:​

  • Term 1: January 15 – March 28
  • Term 2: April 8 – June 17
  • Term 3: July 22 – October 3
  • Term 4: October 13 – December 10​
