About the organisation

Sasol is a global integrated chemicals and energy company with a long-standing presence in South Africa. The company focuses on safely sourcing, manufacturing and marketing chemical and energy products and invests in employee development through career pathways and inclusive workplace practices. This role sits within Regional Operations and Asset Services, at the Cord Plant under Production.

What the role involves

An Operator at the Cord Plant produces detonating cord across the plant’s production stations (C1 to C6). You will work on-site and contribute to each stage of cord manufacture, from measuring powder charges through machine set-up and sampling, to final inspection, packing and labelling. The position requires reliability, attention to detail and strict adherence to quality and safety procedures in an explosives-manufacturing environment.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Produce detonating cord in various sizes, operating across production stations C1 to C6.
  • Measure and prepare powder charges according to cord specifications and the correct formulas.
  • Set up machines with correct tooling for the required product.
  • Record production information: log sheets, production tags and quantities for traceability.
  • Take and submit samples from each spool for quality inspection.
  • Perform quality inspection, packing and labelling of final product.
  • Conduct proper start-up procedures at the beginning of shifts and appropriate shut-downs when required (end of week or on demand).
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices in the production area.
  • Work to required procedures and apply Epex methodology as part of production processes.
  • Work full shifts and overtime when required; perform under pressure while maintaining diligence and integrity.

Requirements explained clearly

  • Minimum formal education: Grade 12. Maths and Science will be an advantage.
  • Experience: At least 6 months’ experience in explosives manufacturing. Experience specifically at a Cord Plant is a beneficial extra.
  • Skills and competencies:
    • Practical production skills and equipment utilisation.
    • Quality and procedure management with attention to traceability.
    • Risk awareness and production risk management in hazardous environments.
    • Ability to work independently with little supervision and to collaborate in a team.
    • Action-orientated and accountable; able to manage complexity and maintain professional development.
  • Physical and work conditions: On-site production role. Must be able to work full shifts and overtime and perform duties under pressure.
  • Inclusion: Sasol is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Reasonable accommodation is available to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Who should consider applying

This role is suited to candidates with recent, hands-on experience in explosives or detonating cord manufacture who want temporary, on-site production work. Ideal applicants are pragmatic, safety conscious, comfortable with machine set-up and sampling, and able to follow strict quality and traceability procedures. If you have Grade 12, at least six months’ explosives manufacturing experience and can work shifts and overtime, you should consider applying.

Edupstairs advice: Make your application stand out

  • Tailor your CV to this role: lead with your explosives manufacturing experience and list specific duties that match the advert (e.g. machine set-up, powder charge preparation, sampling, log-sheet completion, packing and labelling).
  • Use a short covering paragraph or cover letter to explain your hands-on experience with cord production or similar explosive products, your availability for shifts and overtime, and any safety training you have completed.
  • If you’ve worked in a cord plant before, state the exact stations or machines you operated (C1–C6 if applicable) and any tooling or formula work you carried out — employers value concrete, verifiable examples.
  • Highlight your understanding of quality and traceability: reference times when you logged production data, took samples for QC or followed Epex methodology.
  • Keep documents clear and easy to open: use PDF for certificates and employment letters, and ensure contact details for referees are up to date.
