The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), managed under the National Research Foundation (NRF), is inviting applications for its 2026 Graduate-In-Training (GIT) Programme. This opportunity is designed for bright and enthusiastic Engineering and Science-Honours graduates who want to kickstart their careers in one of South Africa’s most prestigious scientific and technological institutions.

Background

SARAO plays a central role in cutting-edge astronomy and engineering projects, and this Graduate-In-Training programme is structured to equip graduates with both academic advancement and workplace experience. The programme begins on 1 March 2026 and will run for a period of three years. Successful candidates will be placed at SARAO sites in Cape Town (Western Cape), Karoo Support Base, Klerefontein (Northern Cape), and Hartebeesthoek (Gauteng) offices.

Graduates selected for the programme will also have access to financial assistance should they choose to register for a part-time Master’s degree at a South African university while enrolled in the programme. This dual-track approach ensures that participants gain professional exposure while advancing their academic qualifications.

  • Placement: Graduates will be stationed at various SARAO sites across South Africa, depending on operational needs.

Eligibility Criteria

This programme is open to South African citizens who have either completed or are in their final year of study in the following disciplines:

  • BEng/BScEng in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Civil Engineering
  • BEng/BScEng in Computer Science, or BSc(Hons) in Computer Science
  • BEng or B.Tech in Civil Engineering
  • MSc in Electronics, Radio Frequency, or Antennas

The programme targets Engineering and Science-Honours graduates who are eager to contribute to South Africa’s innovation and research agenda.
