South Africa’s deciduous fruit industry is on the rise—and so are its young minds. The Hortgro Bursary Programme for 2026 offers ambitious South African students the chance to launch careers in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, and related fields with robust financial and professional support.

Important Dates & Eligibility

Applications for the 2026 academic year open on 15 May 2025 and close on 15 August 2025. Open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, the bursary supports studies aligned with the deciduous fruit industry, including:

  • Agricultural Science and Biotechnology
  • Horticulture (production & post‑harvest)
  • Entomology, Microbiology, Plant Pathology
  • Soil & Water Science and related research areas.

Applicants must be South African citizens, either currently matriculating or already enrolled at a recognized South African tertiary institution.

What the Programme Offers

Recipients may receive:

  • Full or partial tuition coverage
  • A stipend to assist with books, travel, or other study‑related expenses

Over the past decade, Hortgro has invested nearly R50 million into bursaries, supporting hundreds of students across South Africa. In 2023 alone, 35 undergrads received R1.86 m in funding, hosted across institutions such as Stellenbosch University, Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute, CPUT, NWU, UCT, and more. The programme currently supports 21 undergraduate recipients (total ~R1.3 m) and 32 postgraduate scholars (R3.4 m), promoting gender and demographic transformation in the industry.
