Minimum Requirements

Core Professional Requirements
- An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
- Current, valid registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
- Foreign-qualified applicants must be able to produce, before or on the interview date:
- An evaluation certificate from SAQA or any other recognised regulatory body.
Experience Requirements by Grade
- Medical Officer Grade 1:
- No experience required after registration with HPCSA.
- Medical Officer Grade 2:
- A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
- Medical Officer Grade 3:
- A minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
As a Medical Officer in the Eastern Cape Department of Health, your role will include (but is not limited to):
- Providing quality, patient-centred clinical care to all patients.
- Examining, investigating, diagnosing and overseeing the treatment of patients, including in the emergency department.
- Rendering after-hours / call services for emergencies presenting to the facility.
- Actively participating in the training and supervision of:
- Undergraduate medical students
- Postgraduate/junior doctors and medical interns
- Participating in departmental academic activities:
- Case presentations
- Ward/unit rounds
- Journal clubs
- Departmental and multidisciplinary meetings
- Performing relevant administrative functions as required.
- Attending meetings, workshops and training courses as directed by the Head of Department.
- Observing and complying with all departmental policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.
- Committing to continuous improvement, quality assurance and patient safety.
The incumbent must be willing and able to train, develop and supervise junior doctors and other clinical staff within the department.
