Salary Packages (OSD)

Minimum Requirements

Core Professional Requirements

An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
Current, valid registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
Foreign-qualified applicants must be able to produce, before or on the interview date:
- An evaluation certificate from SAQA or any other recognised regulatory body.

Experience Requirements by Grade

Medical Officer Grade 1:
- No experience required after registration with HPCSA.
Medical Officer Grade 2:
- A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
Medical Officer Grade 3:
- A minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

As a Medical Officer in the Eastern Cape Department of Health, your role will include (but is not limited to):

Providing quality, patient-centred clinical care to all patients.
Examining, investigating, diagnosing and overseeing the treatment of patients, including in the emergency department.
Rendering after-hours / call services for emergencies presenting to the facility.
Actively participating in the training and supervision of:
- Undergraduate medical students
- Postgraduate/junior doctors and medical interns
Participating in departmental academic activities:
- Case presentations
- Ward/unit rounds
- Journal clubs
- Departmental and multidisciplinary meetings
Performing relevant administrative functions as required.
Attending meetings, workshops and training courses as directed by the Head of Department.
Observing and complying with all departmental policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.
Committing to continuous improvement, quality assurance and patient safety.

The incumbent must be willing and able to train, develop and supervise junior doctors and other clinical staff within the department.
