In a groundbreaking move to improve foundational learning outcomes in South Africa’s public schools, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in collaboration with TeacherConnect and DBE-E³ has launched the BEEI Curriculum Training: Foundation Phase Course. This initiative specifically targets all beneficiaries of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) who are currently serving in Phase V.
The Foundation Phase Curriculum Training is designed to equip Education Assistants (EAs) with the essential knowledge, tools, and teaching strategies needed to support Grade R to Grade 3 learners effectively. As literacy and numeracy challenges persist in early education, this course aims to build a strong support network within classrooms by enhancing the practical capabilities of BEEI assistants.
What the Course Offers
Offered through the TeacherConnect digital platform, the course is self-paced and accessible via WhatsApp, ensuring inclusivity and ease of access for all beneficiaries, regardless of their location or connectivity challenges.
Key modules of the Foundation Phase Course include:
- Understanding the CAPS Curriculum
Learn how to support the delivery of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) effectively, especially in Language, Life Skills, and Mathematics. - Early Grade Reading and Writing Strategies
Develop skills in phonics, shared reading, and storybook engagement—vital in cultivating a reading culture among young learners. - Learning Through Play

Why It Matters:
The Foundation Phase is considered the most critical stage in a child’s educational journey. If learners are not supported adequately during this phase, they risk falling behind in later grades. This course ensures that BEEI Phase V participants become valuable classroom assets—able to reinforce daily lessons, facilitate reading and writing exercises, and contribute to the overall academic environment.
Through TeacherConnect’s learner-friendly approach, assistants are not just trained, but empowered—encouraged to grow in confidence and pursue careers in education or youth development beyond their contract period.

This course is more than a skills program—it is a stepping stone toward educational transformation. For the thousands of young South Africans participating in BEEI Phase V, the Foundation Phase Curriculum Course is a powerful opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in their schools and communities.
With each assistant trained, South Africa takes one step closer to ensuring every child can read, write, and thrive by the time they leave the foundation phase.
