A completed qualification is not enough if your application uses the wrong reference number or misses the current Z83.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) is inviting qualifying South African graduates to apply for 20 paid internship positions published in DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular 40 of 2026. The programmes appear under the financial years 2026/2027–2027/2028, across eight provinces and multiple study disciplines. Every listed post offers R8,174.75 per month and closes on 20 November 2026.
There is an application rule applicants should not overlook: if you apply for more than one reference number, you must submit a separate Z83 application for each post. Applicants who have participated in any other government internship programme are also excluded.
Before selecting a stream, use the Edupstairs Careers and Qualifications Explorer to research your actual qualification, and the ATS CV Assistant to prepare a factual, appropriately targeted CV. The full 20-post list, registration and alternative manual submission methods are explained below.
Editorial accuracy note: The 2027 headline refers to the financial-year period of this intake. The source does not specify an exact commencement date or a contractual duration measured in months; do not treat the year range as proof of a particular start date.

DPSA Circular 40 was published on 6 November 2026. It lists 20 posts with reference numbers beginning DMPR/INT/2026/001 and a 20 November deadline.
Edupstairs previously covered an earlier DMPR Internship Programme from Circular 13 of 2026. That earlier recruitment had different references, closing dates and stipend arrangements. It must not be treated as a list of vacancies for this new intake.
The DMPR helps regulate South Africa’s mineral and petroleum sectors. Internships advertised here relate to specialised work in mining, environmental management, social development, spatial information, legislation, safety, administration and technology. The department does not provide a detailed task description for every internship, so career examples in this article are guidance, not promised duties.

The graduate internship notice states that it invites qualifying South African graduates and encourages persons with disabilities to apply.
The requirements vary by internship field. A Pretoria Environmental Science post is not interchangeable with a Social and Labour Plan post in another region. Match your actual qualification to the employer’s wording and the correct reference number.
Previous government internships: The department expressly states that applicants who previously participated in any other government internship programme will not be considered. It does not say that every private-sector job or voluntary project automatically excludes you.
Students who need experiential training: Students who need compulsory workplace experience as part of their qualification must attach a formal letter from their tertiary institution. The department has not expressly stated that all TVET students with N6 certificates qualify for all twenty graduate positions.
Age: This specific circular does not impose a numerical age limit in its internship instructions. Do not import a generic 18–35 rule from unrelated graduate adverts.
Unemployment: Although this is a graduate internship opportunity, the general internship notice does not explicitly list a universal unemployment requirement in the extracted section. Applicants should complete the government application honestly and confirm any position-specific restrictions with DMPR.
Accommodation and transport: Successful applicants must arrange and pay for their own accommodation and transport to and from the workplace. Compare the location cost with the stipend before accepting a placement.

The current Z83 is essential. The internship note requires the form effective from 1 January 2021, completed accurately, legibly, honestly, signed and dated, with a comprehensive/detailed CV.
- Obtain the official DPSA Z83 PDF and read its instructions.
- For guided assistance understanding the form, use the Edupstairs Z83 Assistant. The final signed form must still meet DMPR requirements.
- Enter the position title and one exact reference number (for example,
DMPR/INT/2026/010for the Gqeberha Mine Economics position). - The advert requires at least three contactable references in the application details/CV.
- Submit a separate Z83/application for every post you choose. If you write multiple positions on one form, only the first may be considered.
- Applicants applying for compulsory WIL should attach the institution letter at initial submission.
Do not send certified qualifications at the initial stage merely because another vacancy requested them. The graduate internship notice states that certified copies of qualifications and other documents are required only from shortlisted candidates, on or before the interview, and the copies should be no older than six months at that stage.
The Z83 and detailed CV are essential initial documents; candidates should follow the portal’s actual upload fields and contact the recruitment office if anything conflicts.

Use the Edupstairs ATS CV and Cover Letter Assistant to structure your real qualifications and achievements. Then check that the CV contains three accurate, contactable referees, with their permission.

The notice identifies the 2026/2027–2027/2028 financial years but does not expressly give a fixed number of months or exact start date in this section.
5. Is this the same DMPR intake that closed in May 2026?
No. The previous Circular 13 intake used different references, stipend rules and closing dates. Circular 40 is separate.
6. Do I need to complete the Z83 form?
Yes. Use the current Z83 form effective from 1 January 2021, complete it correctly, sign and date it, and provide the detailed CV.
7. Are certified qualifications required with the initial application?
No. DMPR says certified qualification copies and other related documents are required from shortlisted candidates only, on or before their interview.
8. Do I need three references?
The internship instructions require at least three contactable references associated with the CV/Z83 application information.
9. Can I apply for more than one internship?
Yes, but submit a separate Z83 application and supporting documentation for each position/reference. A form listing multiple posts may only be considered for the first post.
10. Can I apply if I completed a government internship before?
No. The DMPR instructions explicitly exclude applicants who previously participated in another government internship programme.
11. Can TVET students requiring WIL apply?
A student requiring compulsory experiential training needs a formal letter from the tertiary institution. Each advertised qualification requirement still applies; N6 is not an automatic match for every post.
12. Is there an age limit?
The internship instructions in this annexure do not specify a numerical age limit.
13. Can I apply by email?
No general application email is advertised. Use e-Recruitment, post, courier or hand delivery.
14. Where do I submit paper applications?
By post/courier to Private Bag X59, Pretoria 0001, or by hand to Trevenna Campus, corner Meintjies and Francis Baard Street, Pretoria.
15. Why does a Mine Economics post ask for Geology?
That is the precise wording in Circular 40. Follow the stated Geology National Diploma/Degree requirement, rather than relying on the title alone.
16. Do the Occupational Medicine and Occupational Hygiene posts require medicine or nursing?
No. For these two internship references the notice specifies Degrees in Statistics/Applied Statistics.
17. Will DMPR pay for accommodation and travel?
The advert makes participants responsible for their own accommodation and transport; no separate allowance is specified.
18. Who handles graduate internship enquiries?
Ms N Sam: 012 444 3722; Mr S Ngcaweni: 012 444 3021.
19. What if I do not hear back?
DMPR says applicants without feedback within three months after the closing date should consider the application unsuccessful.
20. Are persons with disabilities encouraged to apply?
Yes. The internship section expressly encourages applications from persons with disabilities.

First, never select a post only because you recognise the occupation name. Study the qualification requirement; “Mine Economics” expressly asks for Geology, and “Occupational Hygiene” asks for Statistics or Applied Statistics.
Second, never reuse one application form for several reference numbers. Complete a separate current Z83, tailored CV and any applicable institution letter for each post. Keep the references correct. Submit early enough that the department receives your application on time.
Choose a realistic placement location, remembering that accommodation and transport are at your own expense. If the recruitment portal does not yet list the new intake, use the alternatives DMPR advertises and confirm with the listed enquiry officers.
Closing date: 20 November 2026.

The verified vacancies, references, qualifications, stipends, locations and application rules were taken from the DMPR annexure to DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular 40 of 2026, specifically PDF pages 6–9 (printed DPSA pages 86–89). The circular was posted on 6 November 2026.
The employer has not stated an exact application closing time, exact programme commencement date, or a month-counted duration in this section. It gives a financial-year period and R8,174.75 monthly stipend. We do not invent missing details. The employer’s portal may display records on a different timetable from the published circular; applicants should verify live availability with DMPR.
Career descriptions, proposed CV content, related opportunities, tool recommendations and explanations of general qualifications are independent editorial guidance, not individual internship duty statements or extra requirements. Always follow the official recruitment notice and use only verified government application channels. Do not pay anyone who promises a government internship.
