South Africa’s shortage of qualified artisans remains one of the biggest barriers to economic growth and infrastructure development. Electricians, welders, fitters, and technicians are in high demand across sectors such as construction, manufacturing, mining, energy, and telecommunications. Yet thousands of skilled workers across the country still struggle to formalise their experience into nationally recognised qualifications.
A new opportunity has just been announced that aims to close that gap.
In partnership with the Xylem SA Trust, EASTC Technocentric Varsity has launched an Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) Electrical Programme designed to help experienced individuals gain official certification for their skills.

What Is Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL)?
Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning, commonly known as ARPL, is a pathway designed for individuals who have gained skills through work experience but do not yet hold a formal qualification.
In many industries across South Africa, workers learn valuable technical skills on the job. However, without a recognised certificate or trade qualification, it can be difficult to secure higher-paying employment or move into more senior roles.
ARPL helps address this problem.
Through structured assessment, training support, and workplace evaluation, ARPL allows skilled workers to:
- Demonstrate their competence
• Fill any technical gaps in their knowledge
• Prepare for formal trade testing
• Obtain nationally recognised certification
In the case of this programme, candidates with electrical experience will be evaluated and guided toward recognition as qualified electricians or electrical artisans.
Trade Offered in This Programme
Only one trade is currently offered through this ARPL opportunity.
Electrical Trade (20 positions)
Electrical artisans play a critical role in modern infrastructure and industrial development.
Electricians work in sectors such as:
- Construction
• Renewable energy
• Manufacturing
• Telecommunications
• Mining operations
• Building maintenance
• Industrial plants
Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems safely and efficiently.
This programme helps individuals move closer to official recognition as professional electrical artisans.
Who Should Apply?
This opportunity is ideal for individuals who already have some electrical knowledge or workplace exposure but lack formal certification.
Examples include:
- Electrical assistants
• Informal electricians
• Maintenance workers
• Technical workshop assistants
• Construction workers with electrical experience
If you have been working in electrical-related tasks but never completed a formal apprenticeship, this programme could help you move toward trade certification.
