Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) Bursary Programme for 2026

If you are passionate about South Africa’s heritage, fascinated by museums, archaeology, archives, indigenous knowledge, or cultural preservation — then the DSAC Bursary Programme 2026 might be the bridge between your dreams and a successful career in the heritage sector.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is opening doors for undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing heritage-related qualifications at recognised South African public institutions. This is a full-cost bursary, meaning it covers almost everything a student needs — from tuition and textbooks, to accommodation, meals and transport.

Applications close on 31 January 2026, and because DSAC can only award 45–50 applicants, submitting early and ensuring all documents are complete is crucial.

About the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC)

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) is responsible for promoting and preserving South Africa’s heritage, culture, arts, and sporting excellence. One of its most important missions is protecting cultural heritage, strengthening museums, promoting indigenous knowledge systems, and training the next generation of archivists, heritage specialists, researchers and cultural professionals.

The DSAC Heritage Bursary Programme supports this mission by ensuring that talented South Africans — especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds — can pursue rare and specialised qualifications that contribute to the country’s cultural identity and historical preservation.

This bursary has become one of the leading opportunities for students interested in heritage, archaeology, records management, conservation, museum studies, palaeontology, digitisation of cultural assets, and indigenous knowledge systems.

What the DSAC Bursary Covers (Up to R110 000 Total Value)

The bursary is full-cost, meaning most core study-related expenses are covered:

  • Tuition Fees

Your full study fees (as invoiced by your institution) will be paid directly to the university/TVET.

  • Prescribed Books

DSAC covers all the prescribed textbooks required for your programme.

  • Electronic Device (Laptop/Tablet)

Up to R10 000 for an academic device.

  • Accommodation

Up to R50 000 (depending on need and availability).

  • Meals

Up to R18 500 to support student living costs.

  • Transport

Up to R10 000 if applicable.

This funding structure makes the bursary extremely attractive for students who struggle to secure financial aid through NSFAS or other sponsorship programmes.
