About the organisation

The World Bank Group is a global development institution working to end poverty and support sustainable development worldwide. The Legal Vice Presidency (LEG) provides legal services to the Bank’s operations and policymaking. The WBG Pioneers programme is the World Bank Group’s internship initiative that places undergraduate and postgraduate students in various teams across the institution to gain practical experience and contribute new perspectives to development work.

What the role involves

As a LEG intern you will work closely with lawyers in the Legal Vice Presidency on day-to-day legal tasks. The internship is designed to develop legal research, analysis and drafting skills while exposing interns to how legal work supports international development projects. Assignments are varied and may include comparative legal analysis, contract review and participation in project teams and events.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Carry out legal assignments under the direction of the Chief Counsel, Senior Counsels or supervising lawyers.
  • Conduct legal research using files, internet, intranet and databases; analyse and summarise findings.
  • Perform comparative legal analyses, identify legal and policy issues, and propose solutions.
  • Review contracts and legal documents for conformity with the Bank’s guidelines and provide comments.
  • Assist in drafting standard legal agreements and amendments.
  • Participate in task or project teams and attend events or conferences organised during the internship.
  • Undertake ad hoc assignments as requested by supervising lawyers.

Requirements explained clearly

  • Academic enrolment: You must be currently enrolled either in the final year of an undergraduate law programme, or in a postgraduate law programme (master’s, JD, PhD). Enrollment must continue through the final day of the internship.
  • Academic background: Your studies should align with the legal tasks described (research, contract review, international law and policy issues).
  • Interest in development: Demonstrated interest in development work and the World Bank Group’s mission is required.
  • Legal skills: Strong analytical, research and problem-solving abilities; effective written and verbal communication; ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in diverse, team-based environments.
  • Language: Proficiency in English is required. Other languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic) are preferred depending on role.
  • No-fee internship eligibility: This position is offered under the WBG Pioneers No-Fee Internship Track. To be eligible for a no-fee appointment you must either:
    • be enrolled in a Master’s, PhD or similar graduate programme for the entire internship (or in the fifth year or higher of a degree program where higher education is not divided into undergraduate/graduate stages) and provide an official university letter confirming the internship fulfils academic requirements for at least one term of study; or
    • be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies and receive a stipend from your university at least equivalent to the minimum STT T1 fee level in effect at the start of the assignment, as confirmed by an official university letter.
  • Application limit: Applicants are advised to limit submissions to a maximum of three World Bank Group positions; applications exceeding this limit will not be considered.

Who should consider applying

This internship is aimed at law students approaching the end of their undergraduate studies or those enrolled in postgraduate law programmes who want practical legal experience in an international development setting. Consider applying if you:

  • want direct exposure to legal work that supports development projects;
  • have strong legal research and writing skills and enjoy analysing policy and contractual issues;
  • are comfortable working in diverse teams and in high-paced environments; and
  • can satisfy the no-fee eligibility requirements or have university support as required.

Application checklist

Before you start the online application, prepare the following based on the role’s stated requirements and standard application practice:

  • Curriculum vitae tailored to legal internships—highlight relevant coursework, research, legal writing, moot court, clinics, internships and international interest.
  • A concise cover letter that explains your interest in the World Bank, the Legal Vice Presidency and how your background meets the selection criteria.
  • Proof of current enrolment and a statement that you will remain enrolled through the internship end date.
  • For no-fee eligibility: an official university letter confirming the internship fulfils academic requirements for at least one term of study OR a university letter confirming you receive a stipend at or above the specified minimum.
  • Academic transcripts or a summary of academic performance as available and relevant.
  • Evidence of language skills if you speak any of the preferred languages (certificates, coursework or examples).
  • Contact details for professional or academic referees—have these ready in case requested.

Edupstairs Advice

Make your application stand out by aligning concrete examples of your legal work with the duties listed. Practical tips:

  • Lead with relevant legal experience: In your CV and cover letter prioritise research projects, contract review experience, drafting samples or moot court participation that demonstrate analytical and writing ability.
  • Show development interest: Briefly explain any coursework, volunteer work or internships related to public international law, development policy or public finance.
  • Provide the right paperwork: The no-fee track requires an official university letter—obtain this early from your faculty or registrar and upload it with your application.
  • Keep your cover letter concise: One page that maps your skills to the responsibilities (research, comparative analysis, contract review) is better than a long generic statement.
  • Proofread and format for readability: Use clear headings in your CV and avoid dense blocks of text. Recruiters at international organisations value clarity and professional presentation.
  • Demonstrate language skills: If you have working ability in any preferred language, list specific examples (study abroad, translation work, coursework) rather than just stating the language.
  • Prepare for time zones and logistics: The role is on-site; if applying from South Africa, plan how you would manage relocation and check office location options mentioned in the vacancy.
