Tekano Fellowship Programme for 2025

Tekano Fellowship Programme for 2025

The Tekano Fellowship Programme stands as one of South Africa’s most impactful initiatives in transforming health systems and achieving health equity. Rooted in the belief that social justice and health are inseparably linked, Tekano invests in the development of bold leaders who are capable of driving systemic change in both policy and practice. This prestigious fellowship offers an extraordinary opportunity for individuals passionate about addressing inequality and fostering inclusive, sustainable health systems in South Africa.

What is the Tekano Fellowship Programme?

The Tekano Fellowship is a leadership development initiative designed to build the capacity of mid-career professionals who are committed to tackling the root causes of health inequities. The programme draws inspiration from the global Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity network, of which Tekano is a proud South African partner.

Fellows come from diverse professional backgrounds—ranging from healthcare, education, law, civil society, academia, and government—and are united by a common purpose: to dismantle systems that perpetuate poverty, discrimination, and poor health outcomes.

KEY FEATURES OF THE PROGRAMME:

  • Duration: The Fellowship typically runs for one year, combining in-person residencies, virtual learning modules, and collaborative project work.
  • Curriculum: The learning journey is rigorous and immersive, with a focus on personal leadership, systems thinking, policy advocacy, intersectionality, and social innovation.
  • Collaborative Projects: Fellows work in transdisciplinary teams to co-create solutions that address pressing health equity issues within South African communities.
  • Mentorship & Support: Each fellow receives individualized mentorship and becomes part of a supportive community of changemakers across the country and the globe.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Tekano seeks individuals who are:

  • Passionate about social justice and health equity.
  • Already working in or influencing the health and social development sector.
  • Demonstrating leadership potential and a desire for personal and professional transformation.
  • Committed to engaging in collective action beyond the fellowship year.

WHY IT MATTERS:

South Africa remains one of the most unequal societies in the world, with stark disparities in health outcomes based on race, geography, gender, and socio-economic status. The Tekano Fellowship Programme equips leaders with the tools, knowledge, and network to challenge these inequalities and build a society where everyone can enjoy the right to health.

By participating in the fellowship, individuals not only expand their own capabilities but also contribute to the broader movement for systemic change in the country. The alumni network continues to influence national policy, lead community-driven initiatives, and contribute to academic discourse on equity and inclusion.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applications are opened annually on the Tekano website, with detailed information on eligibility and selection criteria. Applicants must submit an online application form, including essays, a CV, and reference letters. Finalists are typically invited for interviews and group assessments.
