Why This Programme Matters

South Africa’s literacy crisis begins early. Many learners reach Grade 4 without basic reading comprehension — and once that foundation cracks, everything that follows becomes harder.

This programme directly addresses that crisis at the Foundation Phase level, where intervention has the biggest long-term impact.

At the same time, it responds to another urgent national challenge: youth unemployment.

Instead of offering a once-off workshop or certificate, this initiative creates a structured bridge:

  • From unemployed youth
  • Into real school environments
  • With hands-on literacy support roles
  • Supported by training, mentorship, and a stipend
  • Leading towards formal teacher education

That combination is rare — and powerful.

About the Organisations Behind the Programme

This programme is delivered through a collaboration between:

  • Rhodes University – via its Centre for Social Development (CSD), a nationally respected institution with deep expertise in education, literacy research, and teacher development.
  • SIOC Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT) – a long-standing community development trust focused on education, skills development, and sustainable livelihoods in the Northern Cape.
  • Northern Cape Department of Education – ensuring alignment with public schooling priorities and access to no-fee primary schools.

This is a credible, institution-backed programme, not a fly-by-night training offer.

What Is a Literacy Ambassador?

As a Literacy Ambassador, you will be placed in a no-fee public primary school in the JTG District and work alongside Foundation Phase teachers.

Your role includes:

  • Supporting learners with early reading skills
  • Helping children learn how to read for meaning
  • Assisting teachers in literacy activities
  • Participating in structured literacy training
  • Gaining real classroom exposure

You are not replacing teachers — you are supporting them while learning how the profession works from the inside.

Training & Academic Development

One of the strongest features of this programme is that it does not stop at work placement.

During the 12-month period:

  • You receive ongoing training on how children learn to read
  • You build facilitation and presentation skills
  • You gain experience relevant to teacher education
  • You may upgrade your NSC (Matric) results

Why does this matter?

Because improving your Matric results can make you eligible to apply for a Bachelor of Education (Foundation Phase) at recognised higher education institutions once the programme ends.

In short:
This programme helps you qualify for the next step.
