About the organisation

Old Mutual is a long‑established financial services group with a strong focus on enabling positive futures for customers. This role sits within RMM in Mass Foundation, a large customer‑facing segment that targets the low and emerging‑middle income market. The team aims to be a trusted financial partner by helping customers access relevant financial solutions and responding to their changing needs.

What the role involves

This is an entry‑level, client service role in a high‑volume call centre environment. You will handle inbound and make outbound calls while learning the products, processes and systems relevant to the business area. Work is supervised and supported through on‑the‑job coaching, with expectations to meet procedural, productivity and quality standards.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Handle client enquiries by telephone, following call centre standards and scripts where required.
  • Provide accurate information and, where possible, finalise calls at first point of contact.
  • Escalate complex queries to more senior agents or specialised teams.
  • Make outbound calls as required to support customer service activities.
  • Develop technical knowledge from learner to moderate level across relevant products and processes.
  • Participate in limited multi‑skilling initiatives to broaden product/process coverage.
  • Work to productivity and quality measures under direct supervision and accept coaching to improve performance.

Requirements explained clearly

  • Matric (Grade 12) — required minimum qualification.
  • Proof of registration for tertiary studies — must be supplied at application stage; this indicates current enrolment at a tertiary institution.
  • On‑site availability — you will work at the Cape Town location during the hours listed in the Quick overview.
  • Core skills — accountability, communication, computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office/Excel. You will also be assessed on your ability to meet goals and manage basic office administration tasks.
  • Attitude and competencies — customer focus, action orientation, decision quality, interpersonal awareness and accountability are important. The role involves supervised decision‑making and following established procedures.

Who should consider applying

Apply if you meet the academic requirements and want practical customer‑service experience in financial services while you study. This role suits people who:

  • are currently registered at a tertiary institution and can provide proof;
  • want to build call centre or client‑service skills in a structured environment;
  • are comfortable working on‑site and with flexible shift windows; and
  • can demonstrate strong communication skills, basic computer literacy and a willingness to learn under supervision.

Old Mutual will appoint from the designated group in line with its Employment Equity Plan for the business unit, so applicants from those groups are encouraged where relevant.

Application checklist

Before you apply, gather the following documents and details. Only include what is requested and relevant:

  1. Up‑to‑date CV with contact details, current tertiary institution and expected study completion date.
  2. Matric certificate (scanned copy).
  3. Proof of registration at a tertiary institution for the current academic period (official letter, fee statement or registration confirmation).
  4. South African ID document or passport (as required for the online application).
  5. List of at least one referee (name, relationship, contact number) — optional but useful.
  6. Prepare to confirm your on‑site availability within the specified working hours.

Edupstairs advice: making your application stand out

This is an entry‑level role, so recruiters are looking for potential as much as experience. Use these practical tips to make your CV and application stronger:

  • Keep your CV concise: one to two pages highlighting education, any customer‑facing roles (retail, hospitality, campus admin), and examples of reliability or meeting targets.
  • Highlight communication skills: give short examples—answered X customer enquiries per shift, resolved complaints, or assisted groups in a team task. Even non‑work examples (student projects, volunteering) count.
  • Show computer comfort: list Microsoft Office skills and any systems you’ve used. Mention Excel basics if you have them (sorting, simple formulas).
  • Demonstrate accountability: include any roles where you met deadlines, managed schedules or handled money/records—these show reliability.
  • Attach clear proof of registration: recruiters will require this document during application. Make sure it is legible and dated for the current academic period.
  • Prepare for the interview: expect scenario questions about handling difficult customers and following procedures. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure answers.
  • Be punctual and professional: if shortlisted, attend any assessments or interviews on time and dress smart‑casual unless instructed otherwise.
