About the organisation
Acuity24 is hiring for a finance internship focused on revenue in a subscription business. Within the finance function, the Operations Accountant manages contract reconciliations and monthly revenue recognition schedules; the internship sits alongside this role and provides visibility of the Head of Finance. The placement is deliberately hands‑on so interns learn the full order‑to‑invoice‑to‑revenue cycle rather than a single narrow task.
What the role involves
This is a development role where you will be taught how contract terms and sales activity flow into the accounting records and how monthly revenue recognition is prepared. You will start by supporting reconciliations and, with guided supervision, progress to preparing schedules and draft journals. You will also get exposure to invoicing, accounts payable, supplier orders and how opportunities move from Salesforce into the accounting system.
Duties and responsibilities
- Help reconcile customer contracts across the contract register, Salesforce, Sage Intacct and the renewal spreadsheet.
- Check contract terms, values and dates against source documents and investigate variances between contracted, billed and recognised amounts.
- Assist with monthly deferred and accrued revenue schedules and, over time, prepare draft revenue recognition journals for review.
- Prepare supporting schedules and analyses that underpin monthly revenue reporting.
- File and maintain supporting documentation to ensure every reconciliation has a clear audit trail.
- Support invoicing, accounts payable processing, supplier statement reconciliations and supplier orders, especially at month end.
- Work with Sage Intacct, Salesforce and advanced Excel to complete tasks assigned by the Operations Accountant.
Requirements explained clearly
Essential
- A completed or in‑progress qualification in accounting, finance or a related field (degree, diploma or study towards SAICA, SAIPA, CIMA or ACCA).
- Comfort with numbers and an instinct to check your own work for accuracy.
- Working knowledge of Excel and a willingness to become genuinely proficient.
- Strong attention to detail and the patience to work through reconciliations until they balance.
- A willingness to ask questions, accept feedback and act on it.
- Reliability around deadlines and clear written and verbal communication skills.
Advantageous (not required)
- Any prior exposure to a finance or accounting environment—vacation work, part‑time bookkeeping or similar.
- Familiarity with an accounting system or CRM.
- An interest in the technology or software sector.
Who should consider applying
This internship is aimed at early career candidates who want to learn specialist revenue accounting in a subscription environment rather than those who already have specialist experience. If you are finishing your studies or recently completed a qualification, enjoy working with numbers, take pride in accuracy, and want structured mentorship while you build practical skills, you should consider applying.
Application checklist
Before you apply, prepare the following so you can submit a concise and targeted application:
- Updated CV that highlights relevant study, coursework and any finance experience (even short‑term or part‑time roles).
- Short cover letter or personal statement (1 page) explaining why you want to learn contract reconciliation and revenue recognition and how the internship fits your career plans.
- Copies or details of your qualification(s) and current study status (transcript if available).
- Examples of Excel work or tasks (describe functions you know such as VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, formulas) — you can summarise these on your CV or in your cover letter.
- Contact details for at least one referee, ideally someone who can speak to your reliability and attention to detail.
- Confirm you are available for a 12‑month, office‑based internship in Cape Town and able to meet month‑end deadlines.

Edupstairs advice — make your application stand out
- Lead with relevant study: Put your accounting or finance qualification prominently at the top of your CV and include modules, projects or assignments that demonstrate exposure to revenue, contracts or auditing principles.
- Quantify tasks: Where possible, quantify your academic or work tasks (e.g. “prepared monthly reconciliation schedules for student society finances” or “managed invoicing for a small business handling X invoices per month”).
- Show practical Excel ability: Briefly list the functions you know (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, conditional formatting) and, if possible, link to a short sample file or describe a problem you solved using Excel.
- Demonstrate attention to detail: Use one short example in your cover letter of a time you identified and fixed an error or improved a reconciliation process.
- Be specific about learning goals: Say you want structured training in contract reconciliation and revenue recognition and explain why — this signals you’ve read the role and are motivated to learn.
- Prepare for practical questions: Be ready to explain how you would approach an unexplained variance between billed and recognised revenue and how you document findings so someone else can follow them.
- Ask good interview questions: Examples include asking about the month‑end timetable, the volume of contracts you’ll work on, training resources (Sage University) and how success is measured for the intern role.
